Im looking for more acceleration and useable speed on the track from my 997C2. I really dont ever touch 5th and 6th and was thinking about changing the gearing or swap out to a GT3 tranny. Is this possible and what do you guys think? Am I completely out of my mind?

I do not think it is a simple task to pair gt3 gaerbox with M96 motor. It is probably cheaper to buy gt3 car.
You should be able to swap final drive gear, speak to some mechanics about this. It will drop max speed for all gears but car will accelerate faster.

Check with Guard to see if gears are available for your current box.
A close ratio gear box is one of the best things you can do for your car right behind a good suspension. Brian Copan built 4 for me in the past.

I don't know what tracks you are going to, but you should at least be getting into 5th on most tracks with a decent straight. But before changing out expensive parts, I'd compare myself to other cars with similar drive trains and see what gears they are exploiting. They are your target.
You can have your 997 box regeared - massively expensive (on any tranny), or follow Uktinpol's advise and change the R&P - cheaper but has a similar though less optimal effect.
Lots of things you can do with your car, but the best goal is to be a faster driver than people with faster equipment.

The R&P change will drop all gears and you may end up with a useless 1st and 2nd gear for a lot of tracks. If you leave 1st as is and split 2-6 for the track/tracks you most frequent you'll end with a pretty good box. In the 993 you could move 5th gear to 6th and save some money. I don't know if that is possible on the 997.

for your 3.8 go with a 3.77 r&p... this will give you a bit more without sacrificing usability....
I went with a 4.0 on my 996 3.4 only because of the anemic power of the 3.4 at low rpms... it works very well but be advised some gear ratios work better on some tracks than others.... 3.77 would work great for your 3.8 because the 3.8 already makes good power and the slightly shorter gearing would give you what your looking for without breaking the bank.
