Porsche dealer not willing/able to CPO a car they are selling..??
I'm looking at buying a 2007 997 from a local dealer. From the carfax it looks like the car was a lease/fleet vehicle in CA and the dealer bought the car at auction. The car has 40k miles on it and is being offered without a CPO
In transporting the car from CA to the local dealer it apparently got damaged and three body panels had to be repaired. When i asked the dealer if they could CPO the car for me, they mentioned that they couldn't due to the shipping damage/repair.
Does this make any sense? I know PNA wont let dealers CPO a car if there is aftermarket equipment installed or if the car was in a serious wreck. Had not heard that they can't CPO if there is damage/repair on some panels during shipment.
Any thoughts/advice/insight is appreciated.

There is a certain minimum requirement to CPO a car, this may fall under that category.

Depends.
Quality of the repair?
Price?
What about when you go to sell it in the future. You'll take a hit.
Personally, I'd pass, but only you know if this is the right Porche for your situation.
Good thing the dealership was honest with you.

The rule, as I understand it, is that no more than two body panels can have been repaired/repainted. This seems to violate that rule. It doesn't mean the dealer can't sell you an extended warranty, it just means you can't get a CPO, which by definition involves meeting some very specific criteria.

With a respray, even with no damage, the price would have to be absurdly attractive.
Problem is, you don't know the real story.
Hard to imagine any quality shipper would damage 3 separate panels.
That's not even getting into why it was at auction in the first place.

I haven't seen the car yet, but supposedly the damage was at the rocker panel and the rear bumper. Understand I may take a hit on resell, but would probably keep the car for at least 4 years, so not massively concerned about that.
As for the price... it is a very nicely loaded 2007 S with 40k miles asking about $48k

I agree with you about not worrying about the effect on resale. There is way too much chatter about that sort of stuff on this site. By the time you are selling, you'll be looking at a 10 year old mass-produced car with ~70-80K miles that had some minor-sounding damage professionally repaired. This isn't going to be a collector's item or anything. How much extra do you want to pay now to get an extra $500, if that, in 4 years?
Edit: That's not to express any opinion about the asking price on this car. I'm not an expert on that.
