Default Interesting Question

On a 2011 or 2012 997 with a PDK tranny, can a dealer's service department change the steering wheel from the standard PDK wheel with shift buttons to the sport wheel with paddle shifters? And, if so, how much would they charge?

Yes. Cost of the wheel plus labor. It's a 20 minute job, tops, ( I watched them do mine) but they may try to get you for an hour of labor or more. Depends on the dealer and your negotiation skills.

Depends. For leather it's about $1K (Natural leather colors are a couple hundred more, I think), for Alcantera around $2K. Check out the Suncoast site.....

Got it from Suncoast for $845, did it myself in about 40 mins because I was being totally **** about it. It's really about a 20 min job. The new steering wheel comes with a new mounting bolt with Locktite already applied.

i changed mine out - avoided the alcantara because many say it'll show wear more prevalently. not a bad thing necessarily, but i also don't have alcantara anywhere else.

i didn't do it myself because of the airbag / warranty stuff. i don't think they even charged me for the install as i recall....it was about 20 minutes.

if you do it yourself, it's very simple, but I recommend studying up on the forums. Great information on steering wheel installation. And I would not be particularly afraid of working with the air bag. Make certain negative battery cable is disconnected for 15 minutes (or the battery is disconnected altogether for that long), and remember that they shipped that air bag to you via UPS, so it's not a china doll. Like a poster above said, changing out the steering wheel is a 20 minute job, AFTER you have done it once already. It will probably take longer because you haven't done it before.

Here's some photos and instructions some guy posted for this job...

i agree it's probably silly to worry about working with the airbag but i think they just ship the wheel and you change out your own airbag (??)

Correct, the wheel does NOT include the airbag. You re-use your existing airbag. The airbag has to be removed to remove and/or install the wheel anyway, so you're stuck playing with it no matter what.

I just stayed to one side while I removed and disconnected the airbag in case it went off. It didn't.

one note that i would remind the op. the steering wheel depends on your model for 2010 and above you will have the sport and sport plus lights on the wheel. this will need activation using the piwis. the steering wheel change is very easy but the activation of the lights take a bit longer. in addition if the steering wheel was changed i think we still need to calibrate a steerign sensor just to be sure. this is also done using the piwis. Its not a very expenxive thing to have the dealer do. for 2009 its a diy. but youstill need to have the steering sensor reset
