Default can we actually mount our radar detectors on the windshield via suction cups???

read in the manual that using suction cups on the windshield of our p cars is not recommended as our glass has a protective coating. suction cups will permanently mark the glass after a while. can we confirm this if truth or myth? we have a lot of threads here where the V1's were mounted beside the rear view mirror using the suction cups....

I have a Passport Solo that I mount on the windshield with cups.. No issues so far (it's been there a little over a year). Bought it at the Porsche dealer. You'd think if there was a chance it would screw up the inside of the windshield, the dealer wouldnt' sell 'em.

My V1 has never been removed since installation with the suctions cups. It also rode in one spot on my 997.1 for three years without moving.

I'm sure they just put that in there so they don't get sued, CYA.

Unfortunately, that mount only works with the V1.

Some cars can come with a protective coating that the cups could damage/mar, but I have not found any cars that I've owned and used a V1 in to have this coating: 01 Camara Z28, 02 Boxster, 02 VW Golf Tdi, 06 GTO, 08 Cayman S, 03 Turbo.

Be sure the window surface is very clean before fixing the suction cups. Dust can contain abrasive silica which can cause some light scratching that might over time stand out but absent that...

Of course you need to check the car's owners manual to see if there are any cautions against using suction cups to hold a radar detector or a NAV unit to the windshield, just in case the factory knows there's an issue and covers it.

Sincerely,

Macster.

No problems whatsoever since 2006. However, I recommend that once you do set them up, take the unit out of the holder instead of taking down the suction cup mount--the suction cups do degrade from UV lighting over the years, and the less they are taken down and put up the better they hold.

I second that motion. Mine suction cups wore out pretty quick from removing the them when parking at work. Now I just slide the device from the holder and they seem to be holding up very well. I have my unit tucked up on the passenger side just to the upper right corner of the rearview mirror. It's out of the way and mounted as high as I can get it per the V1 instructions.
