Long Term Ownership?

Was having a conversation with my banker. He came by and was asking me if I was planning on Capital expenditures in the coming year. I told him that I wasn't really interested, my current equipment works fine and there is little new that is either superior or even a little better. he then asked me if I would be buying any new cars etc, personal Capital goods. I told him ditto.
he's a car guy too and knows I like exotics since he's financed more than one. Told him the new Porsche isn't so exciting (really guys, you'd better be a better driver than me if you plan to lose me at the track with one). He told me that he's had a hard time lending money, most folks are like me and aren't really salivating over the next Best Thing in industry or leisure.
I told him that many of us have just "grown up", and new toys always are more expensive with questionable returns. Marketing isn't dead by any means, just that we are becoming resistant.

Ditto +1. I still love sliding into mine and cranking him up. No need for the next new thing. I may upgrade to a newer well optioned 997.2 in a few years when my EasyCare warranty runs out but in the meantime IMS be damned, I'm driving him like he should be driven. BTW - anybody have 100k miles on a 997 yet?

i think most likely next car i buy will be for track only - either an old beaten up cup car like 996 cup or well modded stripped 997 gt3 car with cage and other track goodies. i can also see a possibility to get rid of current 997 car for panamera S or turbo but more likely if track car will come then it will be some heavy SUV that also be used to tow a trailer with track car. after we buy a new house that will have enough parking space to keep such a trailer. should be possible in 5 years or so that is fine with current car lifecycle. i just like to do long term planning, even if does not work out well eventually.

I'll likely keep mine. Only have 14,000 miles and i still really like it. I will drive a 991 and see what its like. If its a big improvement then maybe in 1-2 years i'll get one. My only problem is I get antsy at the 3-4 year mark of any car. Not a reflection on the car, just me being antsy. I'm thinking I may just do some minor tasteful mods like PSE, Sharkwerks bypass and maybe some wheels to stave that off.

To say that my '09 Carrera S is my last Porsche 911 would be unrealistic. Since, for good or bad, I'm not a used car buyer that means a 991 of some kind (or whatever comes next) is in my future. I kept my first 911 for 13 years and the second one for 8. Given the trend, I'd say my current car will be around for another 4 or 5 years, at least.

Had the 997 GTS itch ... One commute on my C4S through pure ice over Snoqualmie pass took care of that one.
Had the Mezger 997.1 TT vs PDK equipped TT itch .... One commute on my 3.2 reminded me of what it was like before "we" all became obsessed with the ultimate handling and horsepower and that took care of the TT itch.
My current DD the C4S is the car for me for years to come. I know how Mike drives and takes care of his cars. So let me do the math. He will buy a second gen 991 GT3 in 2017 and then if his record holds good he will be ready to move on to the next 911 in 2020 .... Just in time when it hit 50.

I'm a weak-minded fool when it comes to buying cars. No way am I going to keep from replacing my GTS before it's turned 3 years old... 2 years more likely... 1 isn't out of the question. Heck, you're only middle aged once...

I turn over cars like it's nothing, becoming quickly bored. A month after buying my 997, I was already looking at Autotrader.com.
It's not the car, it's a sickness.
I suppose I should always lease, as a means of forced "ownership" or have Jay Leno's income.

My 09 has 11k on the clock, new rubber on all corners, and the Tubi system is still shiny. I looked really hard at the GTS, couldn't justify the $40k difference for 25 more hp and center locking wheels.
The only thing that would tempt me is an 09 Turbo... less than 5k miles... 6 speed.
A GT 3 would become a bit tedious on the street, to me.
I think I'll play these cards...

In for the long haul. Still get turned on every time I get behind the wheel. Car is fully sorted and runs like a champ.
Still have a year and a half of extended warranty coverage through Geico Mechanical Breakdown Insurance.
No interest in writing a $60-70K check for a 2012 GTS. Love everything I am reading about the 991 but I am very happy with what I have...
