Gelli, you can do anything with the exhaust after the cats...leave the headers/cats alone. Removing the rear muffler/resonater and replacing that with crossover pipe hardly changes the sound at all. They do improve flow and sound just a little. You will need to change out the 2 side mufflers with something else to really hear a difference

Thanks mdrums. Is it worthwhile to start just with the cross over pipes, then change out the side mufflers? Or is that just a waste of time/money?

But so what?? I dont get these type of comments. Its doesnt effect HP or torque (and neither does just changing to different mufflers including PSE) so of what relevance is this?? This mod is for the SOUND so if it has a negligible effect on performance who cares if it creates "turbulence" or if its "not the same exhaust flow route"??

PSE is designed to replace the side mufflers, but still work with the center muffler or pipes that replace the center muffler.
However, some after market mufflers, like Tubi, are designed to replace the side mufflers and the center muffler.
I installed the Sharkwerks pipes to replace the center muffler, and got better sound, but not PSE sound. Four weeks later I added PSE and got GREAT sound with the PSE/Sharkwerks combo. Even if I had added PSE first, I still would have replaced the center muffler with the Sharkwerks pipes, because this car does not need 3 mufflers.

I would also like to add that Fabspeed does say thier is a power gain from the X pipe based on their dynos. I do say that when the X pipe was put on there was a noticeable seat of the pants power increase. Not huge but noticeable.

New guy 5 posts. Pay some respect to someone with a lot more 997 experience then yourself. The gundo hack is exactlly that a hack. Its amazing you were at the factory to see how they manufacture their sport exhausts in the rudimentary manner you suggest. I'm sure your muffler shop did an amazing job and you will never get an exhaust leak? Most feel great saving a few bucks. I'm happy for you, especially with all of those variables. Hat tip PTK Parks. Look at you all gussied up!

google or the search function could have saved you, but I do a short one:
its a modification of the side mufflers with the help of a 1' to 2' pipe welded between muffler in/outlet that should cost below $500 that more or less replicates the sound of PSE (porsche sport exhaust)
