After considering a Porsche for while, I bought a used 2007 997.1 C4S to get started on the brand and also get to know the car well. Ultimately, I wanted to buy a brand new 911 customized to my needs(wants!). So I test drove a new C4S recently, and I wasn't awed at all buy the difference in the cars, i.e. 997.1 vs 997.2.
In fact, the 997.1's was more fun to drive if only because the exhaust was louder and the whole car just a little less refined. Of course 997.2 came alive at higher revs and when driven hard. Now I am not inclined to make the change-up but rather wait until the 991 gets established. I havent driven GTS though..I dunno whether that is a conving argument. It might be just as fun to add mods to my 997.1 than to upgrade for the sake of it. Any thoughts?

100% agreed on your impression. I test drove a .2 C4S at Nurburgring and got the same impression... the difference between .1 and .2 is so small, it's basically a toss-up, .1 much more raw, better sounding, and the AWD doesn't engage as much making it feel more like RWD, while .2 as you said is a bit more refined but more boring!
Here's what I suggest to buyers stuck between .1 and .2: Pay the .2 premium, ONLY IF the options NOT AVAILABLE in .1 is important to you. Namely: PDK, Touchscreen PCM/Bluetooth, Sport PASM (lower and sportier than PASM)... otherwise .1 is just more fun and amazing value.
It's another level of driver enjoyment. If you don't need the back seat, there's no question about it. You'll know from the moment you sit down in it that you've signed up to a new driving ethos.
Thanks for great input. I look forward to hearing more opinions from everyone else as well. Like you all suggested, I am going to wait around the 991, and also check out the GT3 option.
As for the extras that come with 997.2, besides the sportier suspension, I dont care for anything else. I hardly listen to the Bose stereo during my 20 - 30 dailt commute!
Well you're where I was with my 996. Didn't feel the jump to the 997.1 was "worth it ". When the 997.2 came out, I wanted the extra 40 HP and torque plus no IMS RMS issues. Couldn't be happier. In your case, I would wait till the 991 comes out and consider it, a GTS or a 997.2 GT3. Only then will you know what floats your boat.
I have a different point of view....after owning both I believe the .2 is better in every way....quicker....more fun to drive....much better nav.....louder.....a step up for sure......but to each his own!
I went through the same process as well. Over here we get majority of them in auto. I wanted one with manual since i already have a 335i auto at home. Hence when i came across a 997.1 manual with X51 power kit, and it was a cabrio, i knew i had to get it. Adds something different to the stable. The driving is more raw i feel. The only downside was the the 997.2 had slightly nicer outside shell. But not an issue since i can always go for a new bodykit.
To reiterate what Tommy above said, to each his own.
After taking in all the info, I have decided to keep my 997.1 C4S. Here is a question: has anybody upgraded their 997.1s with X51 air-intake and the headers? It costs around 5k from what I understand. I got about 6-7k for mods that i can play aroound with. I want to do as much as I can for performace and for exhaust upgrade. opinions and personal experience?

Problem is, X51 package needs also internal upgrade, AND Software update to take advantage of the intake and headers to gain that extra 30HP. Headers are cheap enough and definitely help and will make the car sound better... the inbox might not do much for you and it for sure if $$$.

Talk to me about the sound. I've got the PSE on my 997.1 and love it. I'm interested to know if there is a significant sound change from the X51 headers when added to this setup...
