Rear tires spent in 7,900 miles

Had the fuel pump replaced under the "campaign" effort and the service manager calls me and says my rear tires (RE050A's) are dangerous. He only had one tire in stock so I told him to leave it alone and I'll take a look at it when I pick up the car. Yes....the inner 2" are pretty much slick but plenty left outside of that. Doesn't matter. Another month and the tail will start dancing on wet roads.
Some have posted stories here of getting almost 20,000 miles out of the rear tires. No disrespect to anyone but I can't see how that's possible short of a driving style that defeats the purpose of owning a sports car. If I'm off base on that I'd love to hear how I can double the life of the rear tires without compromise. Alignment? Doesn't seem to matter. My -06 was aligned perfectly but still ate the rears at 9K mile clips. This one I don't know about. I assumed it would come reasonably aligned from the factory. I bought it with just 1,900 miles on the dial.

A bit on the low side, but not by much. My PS2 rear was gone at around 10-11K with 4 track sessions. I actually found a lightly used PS2 to replace them with and now front/rears got similar wear and next season they both will be replaced with Super Sports!
I'd check alignment when you swap tires, and if you can change fronts, I'd change to Michelin's as they got much better wear rating!

The last set of tires I had on my '04 996 were PS2. They had 13K miles on them whem I sold the car and I am estimating that they would have given me another 5K miles. The previous tires, Pirelli P-Zeros, only gave me 9K to 11K on the rears.
After you get the new tires, (I will go with the Michelin PSS when my current Pirelli tires die) get an alignment. You could have them dial out 0.25 to 0.5 degree of negative camber on the rears. That will keep the inner edges from getting eaten up, but it will compromise the handling, especially the cornering, to a degree.

I have over 8,000 miles on my car and the Pirelli P zero rossos look like they should go to 20K. I really enjoy pushing the car a bit in corners. I have not seen any uneven wear yet.

Your car is lowered on progressively rated H&R Springs. This places tires under significantly higher duress while under load than a linear rated OEM spring. The lowered ride height is exascerbating tire wear. IIRC, you complained of the same issue on your previous .1 997..... which was also on H&R springs ?

do your alignment and reduce rear toe to 0.10 and front toe to 0.05. in stock alignment they put huge amounts of toe to make car more 'stable' and it kills tires, also makes car much less reactive.

Sorry but the cynic in me can't resist to mention this, but in buying used you don't know what the other people did in the car before it was sold. Track? DE? Donuts in a new housing development? All of the above?

have you been running with the stability control off? My experience is that kills the tires esp the rears. Also the age of tires makes a difference- they wear more quickly when they are older.

I'm running RE50A's on my car. The rears lasted about 15k miles, and still had no white cord showing. The fronts are at 16k and should be good to at least 20 I hope. I have Damptronics, lowered about 3/4", a little more camber, and have autocrossed 3 or 4 times. I was actually surprised that I got 15k, as I figured 10k isn't unusual. Generally, I'm quite pleased with these tires, given that they are much less expensive than PS2s.

With my '08 C2 I got 20K miles on front and rear set of RE050's. The original tires were still on the car when I traded it for an '09 C2S. The tires were wearing pretty thin but no cords were showing anywhere. So it can be done.
OTOH, with my present GTS I went through all 4 original tires (PS2's) in 2500 miles! That included 5 track days. I managed to "chunk" all 4 tires along the outside edge - stock suspension settings on a course that includes part of a NASCAR oval (the "roval" at Fontana) is a little tough on tires!
So tire mileage is entirely a function of two things - driving style and suspension settings.

I replaced my PS2 s after 14k miles and 8 de days with Michelin Super Sports. I'm hoping for even better tire wear with the improved wear rating of the SS s. Car has PDK and sport suspension with limited slip. Very carful to maintain pressures. The insides of the rears were maxed out but fronts could have gone another 4-6k miles.

I got 20K out of a set of Contis with the stock suspension. When I installed the RoW M030 the next set lasted 9K. The change in geometry might have improved handling but it came at a price.
