Default WARNING-DIY Oil Change...

Changed the oil today on my 2007 Carrera. I was using a large round plastic oil pan with one small hole in the center. Problem is the oil was coming out so fast it was hitting the top of the pan an spalshing out onto the driveway. It would have been better to use a pan with a large mouth so the oil can drain into the bottom of the pan.

You're not the only one.

At least your drain plug didn't fall into and block the small hole.

I use a pan with a built in container so that the oil flows down to a center hole then inside for storage. Can hold about 1.5 oil changes in it so that bids me time to get to the station for disposal. If my drain plug drops down into the pan...it usually just stays high on the side as gravity takes care of the oil draining towards the center of the pan and storage part/hole. I think Griots also sellls a similar but more expensive version.

Here's my setup changing the oil on my old 997.1 Carrera. Pretty straightforward. No issues with oil spill or splashing.

That's the drain pan I use for my 997.2. It fits underneath the car with the wheels on the ground. The drain holes are large enough to handle the oil but small enough to catch the drain plug.

Mine is like yours but is round and only has one drain hole. The problem is the oil is coming out with such velosity it is splashing out when it its the top of the pan. I have another oil pan that has a large hole maybe 6" with a plastic screen which is much better.

I have a round one like yours Jim. Best solution I have found is to unfold a big tarp under the rear of the car once it's up on the ramps and before starting the oil change. That way any splatter or overflow is on the tarp instead of my driveway. The tarp can be easily cleaned up too.

My guess is so that he knew when to stop backing up.

I have the same oil drain pan and use the same setup as Mdrobc124 except I don't elevate the rear of the car. The drain pan works great and Im pretty sure I got it from walmart but a couple years ago. One good tip I got which may help the OP is to not loosen the oil cap. The oil flows quick enough without it and opening the oil cap will only make it flow quicker.

I just did my first oil change yesterday. I used pointers from this and other forums. I posted my consolidated notes on how I did it with some pics at the following url in case anyone would find it helpful:

After encountering some of the same issues mentioned above, I decided it was worth the cost of my local indy doing my oil changes so I could avoid all the cleanup and hassle (including running the old oil down to the recycling place).

Mind you the torque on the drain plug for a basic Carrera is 50 nm or 37 ft lbs. That's a lot.

The "LN" full flow direct oil kit also helps. Their $5 filter makes home changes even less expensive

I learned from the same splashing issue and switched to a 5 gallon bucket for all subsequent changes. I cut the top off it so that it became flexible and I could pinch a little "spout" into the rim so I could easily pour it out into containers. Works like a charm.

I have one of these for changing the oil on my V10 Touareg and it gets 100% of the oil (13 qts)

Although it does NOT get all the oil from the 3.8 (since no dipstick tube) it gets most of it so when I do pull the plug I only have to deal with a few quarts.
