Default DIY Oil change -- very easy ;-)

Just thought I'd drop a note on my impressions on changing the oil on the 911. Those on the fence, don't shy away.

I've changed oil on many of my previous cars, lately though I've stopped due to the lack of time.

I've put 2k miles on my car since purchasing it back in June and figured it would be a good time to start fresh (last oil change on record was 10k miles/1yr)

changing the oil on this car was far easier than most other cars I've worked on. The access to the drain plug and filter was a piece of cake.

Fresh Mobile 1 0W/40 has a great placebo effect on smoothness ;-). I also noticed that the "oil burning" smell after a spirited drive is no longer noticeable ( again could be a placebo effect)

I agree, which makes it hard to understand the outrageous prices the dealership charges. I even had an independent shop quote me $160 for a job whose parts (oil and filter) only cost around $75 retail.

+997. Walk in the park. Especially after doing my own 993 changes.

Just curious, did you fellas apply Optimoly MP3 to the O-ring for the filter housing (as called for in the FWSM), or did you use motor oil?

IS there a DIY guide or pictorial of how to do this, somewhere on the site?

There are some posts about it. I'm preparing to do it myself. Apparently it's similar to the 996. Here's a very good YouTube video for the 996 DIY:

Here is the link you want for the 997 - OCBen has one of the best step by step with pics. I did mine and it was a snap - didn't even jack up the car based on rennlist member comments.

The video for the 996 is pretty close till it comes to the amount of oil... mine took 8.5 just as OCBen mentioned in his post below. Good luck.

its soo easy. Takes me about 20mins. It costs me like $60 in parts.
I think the dealer charges $175, but they do offer nice little drinks and snacks

I concur. I've changed oil on a lot of different cars over the years, and the 997.1 is one of the easiest. Don't even have to jack up the car.

My local dealer doesn't offer anything beyond stale coffee and
tap water. Snacks? We don't need no stinking snacks!

I have a couple of parts available for this since I've sold my 997S:

Filter housing (preload the new filter, fill with oil, lube the o-ring, install - clean out the old one and put it on the shelf for next time) P/N 996-107-020-55

Filter removal tool

At least one drain plug and 2 crush washers both unused

One new oil filter (996-107-225-53) and one air cleaner (Mahle LX 582/1)- both unused

And lots of oil - Mobil1 0W40 IIRC.

If anyone is interested PM me and we can work out a cheap deal.

And the oil change is about as easy a job as there could be on any car.

EDIT: All parts are now gone except the oil. Local (KY) would be best if you want a qt or 20.
