Smile 997 key fob

Hi Friends.

I have 2005 C2S and recently upgraded my keys to the Gen 2 version. They are black and chrome (rather than grey and black) and made with a much nicer material.

We all know that Gen 1 keys are prone to cracking and breaking etc, however even if your 997.1 pcar keys are fine I would highly suggest upgrading them. The new versions suit a pcar so much more - they fit the car well and look very good indeed.

Been thinking about doing this myself. How much did it end up costing you all in?

The new key also has the advantage of not being activated accidentally by something in your pocket..

So are these basically plug and play? Or do they need some sort of programming?

i hated my 997.2 key because the end piece is metal and rattles... i wish my 997.2 had the 997.1 key.

i think the 997.2 key design isjust bad. first of all its big. with all the electronic now why did they not go with keyless. second we have a sports car with suspension to match...Riley's comments are right on. the thing just rattles like crazy and you can hear it and is very annoying. Another plus to go keyless. third that chrome portion which rattles is starting to look dirty and really not classy at all. I would have preferred a key similar to the MB which is made from some hard plastic and is all black. does not rattle and you do not see any metal key. and should a metal key be needed in an emergency, the metal key is hidden in the key. another one of those money making routes of porsche. That is why it is one of the most profitable car companies around. it charges so much for its cars but we get keys like this.

Need to buy a blank key blade and have cut and the fob has to be programmed by the dealer.

How much does the stealer charge to cut the key and program the fob?

Any high end locksmith can provide the blank and cut it for you - certainly less expensive than the dealer...or you could try to remove blade from old fob and install in new fob but that takes the skill and patience of a watchmaker. Don't know the cost of programming but you need to do this to get ignition to recognize the transponder chip in the new fob.

Don't know what cutting the key costs but dealers typically charge about $200 to reprogram the remote...you have to reprogram all keys at the same time.

I've got one gen 1 key and one gen 2 key...I like the old key better because its quieter (with key fob in use).

I don't get it, to me it's just a key (gen.1) and is either in my pocket or in the ignition or buried in the basket we keep our car keys in. But the libertarian in me believes everyone is entitled to hate it without recrimination (FWIW I'm no paragon of common sense as I really dislike the chrome colored headlight washing unit).

But to hijack just a little, given Porsche's desire to suck us into buying expensive options, I always wondered why they did not offer color matched plastic on the Gen. 1 keys. That is, replace the gray w/ whatever color your car is. Seems like there might be plenty of people who'd go for this as an exclusive item. It's not like Porsche to leave option money on the table.

Get the new (gen 2) from suncoast, then have the dealer program. they charged me 1/2 hr labor to do it. Make sure to tell them to put in all the stuff you had programed in the old key ie doors lock when you start to drive etc. I like the new key much better.
