Point taken but I think the adage still holds as a general rule of thumb. In my case I set an arbitrary top price for what I'll spend on a car not based on what I can afford but on what I dare to drive on the street with all of the distracted drivers. I think the point of the adage however is that a $50K Porsche may be a lot more expensive to own than a $70K Porsche.
