Well... IMHO, I love the sound of my 997.1 S. The engine has an unmistakable wail that raises the hair on your back and puts a grin on your face that kicks in at around 5000 rpms that the 997.2 DFI doesn't have. The .2 nice car? Absolutely. But if you want a weekend warrior, save some cash, go for the drama and an extended warrenty with a nice low mile standard 6 speed 997.1 You can't lose. Resale values? Forget about it. These a GREAT cars. We're not talking mutual funds dude. We're talking about emotion. We're talking about getting up at 5am and going out for a wail when the streets are empty. Yeah!

I hate this advice and see it all the time on this board. It makes sense for a certain type of buyer but not for everyone! Please quit stating it like it is some sort of gospel truth. I could comfortably afford anything in the entire current Porsche lineup if I wanted to but I don't. In fact my latest Porsche acquisition was a 993 widebody. Hardly the newest I can comfortably afford - and in fact the oldest of all the cars I own. But it was and is the right addition to my current set of cars.
Please recognize that the 997 board is just one small corner of the Rennlist site and of the broader Porsche community. Most of the rest of the owners (and many who own 997s AND older cars) do not at all agree with this tired statement. Go post that in any of the aircooled forums if you want to see what I mean.
And even on the 997 board, not everyone is enamored with the latest and greatest or necessarily has just one hobby. Some people are happier with a $50k 997.1 and a sailboat than a 997.2 and no sailboat - for example.

Thanks, you just help me make up my mind.
997.2 it is!
But 997.2 is out of my budget right now, I probably need to wait 1-2yr,
but i will be watching.
This may be a dumb question, which month in 2009 did they
switch to 997.2? what is the built date that i should look for?
thanks!

Doc,
Yes, Porsche did refine the suspension for the 997.2 cars. Much of that refinement was based on the suspension changes which were made to the 997.1 GT3 RS.
Overall, there are a lot of changes to the 997.2 versus the 997.1. Usually, Porsche does a few modest tweaks to the "face-lift" (.2) models, but IMO, the 997.2 has enough changes and advancements that it could have been a new release.

- Noticeable refinement to the suspension
- All new (9A1) engine, which has:
- an additional 30 HP for for the 3.8L (+20 HP for the 3.6L)
- 40% fewer moving parts
- is about 15 MM shorter (top to bottom)
- DFI (Direct Fuel Injection)
- No Intermediate Shaft
- Water pump moved to the outside of the engine
- Upgraded PCM
- The introduction of the PDK transmission (Note: Sport Chrono is a MUST have to really get the best of what PDK can offer)

The .1/.2 changeover isn't a mid-year change, so the build date is not the issue. Model year 2008 is a .1 and model year 2009 is a .2. You can't mistake the two if you know the model years.
If you're looking at a car and the year model is not listed, just look at the tail lights or the dash center console or the signal lights in the front fascia. Those are the three most obvious cosmetic differences in the two.

I need to do some research and find some picture online to compare
the differences.
Then i can tell between a .1 & .2 on the street, i was never able to do that
before...

997.2 09 + will have a piece on the engine that says DIRECT INJECTION.
"buy the newest you can afford" I used to subscribe to that thinking, but after selling my 14K mile 07 and buying a 54K mile 06...saving $17000 dollars, and getting 100% of the fun and looks ! I'll never look back with any regret.
In my mind if your looking at 997.1 S cars, go for a 06 and save some money over the same 07-08's , PPI's have to be good ofcourse !

I did go with a 08 C2S. I know last year must have had some of the kinks worked out.
I know the peel off material is gone from the dash, maybe there are a few other things.
It was a huge stretch in $'s to go to a .2S and I did want an S with manual transmission.
I went to the Porsche roadshow and at that time they were showing the 997.2.
So I go tot drive it up to 120 and did a AutoX.
It was great since I took a day off in the middle of the week and missed the crowd.
I told the instructors I was looking to seriously get a car so I got lots more seat time and opinions from the drivers from AL.
They all loved the Cayman R. But I needed rear seats.
at least two of them said get the 997.1S over the newer non S.
But I wanted to track it a bit and take it to AutoX.
They did say if you can go to the 997.2S then do that, otherwise I was told 07 or newer C2S.
That same day I did go drive a 997.1S (friends) and got to punch it a bit and I didn't miss the extra bhp.
I may have been able to stretch it for a 997.2S but all the colors I saw and options didn't match what I wanted.
In the end I needed to be happy and comfortable with the purchase, I am.
