2007 C2S with 28k miles and no IMS failure.

I was told by a Porsche dealer the failure rate is less than .5% on the 997.1 and even less on the 997.2

Well sure it's less on the 997.2 - no IMS.

2005 S, 31k miles.
No failure, just had it changed out for an LN as the car needed a clutch...

2005 C2S. 997.1. M97 engine. 68,000 miles. IMS just checked with clutch replacement. Seal removed. IMS looked new.

2008 6 speed C4S (997.1) with 57k miles, car is new to me but no history of engine replacement.

Clutch was replaced a couple weeks ago, no signs of leakage near the IMS bearing (it has the non-easily replaceable IMS bearing being a 2008).

Recent oil change and filter inspection revealed a few non-ferrous (aluminum) flakes and that's it.

Default 2005 early production date

I live in FL and the warm weather most of the year keeps the average ambient temperature around 70 degrees in the morning opposed to much lower if I lived up north. So starting the engine, the oil is less viscous and the metal less cold so the oil gets to operating temperature quicker (smaller delta H) and proper lubrication occurs quicker and possibly less wear on the ims bearing.

The only problem with this theory is my two friends who live near me owned 996s each and had their ims fail; one at 60k miles and the other at 89k miles. 😔

With a small bearing car, I would definitely replace it with the IMS solution. For $3k,why risk a $20,000 repair and the hassle. I mean, that's not that bigva number when you think about it, it's a set of cast wheels.

I just got the production date on the car (and for the failed original engine), October 2004.

So my 2006 997S has 60k miles right now and from time to time when i start it up i hear a fast grinding sound. Kinda like a spinning sound. Any Idea from past IMS issues if this is a sign of IMS failure.

That is either the starter gear that engages with the flywheel hanging up and not retracting fast enough or it's your timing chains slapping because the tensioners aren't working right or you've worn the protective plastic coating off the tensioner paddle. If it's the starter gear it would make the same sound as trying to restart a running car. If it's the timing chain and it's losing tension you need to get it checked immediately. If it slips a tooth or snaps the chain you're in trouble. Are you seeing any metal or plastic debris in your oil filter. Plastic is from the tensioner paddle guide, aluminum is from the tensioner paddle itself if you've worn through the plastic guide, and ferrous metal would be from the IMS bearing most likely.

I'd do an oil change, inspect the filter media, and also drop and inspect the oil pan for any debris.
