Porsche Acoustics
Is is just me, or does it appear that Porsche seems to miss the boat every other time with the engine sound?
For example, we all agree that the air-cooled engines sounded like they were supposed to. Then came the 996. It was a big disappointment in the acoustics department. So much so, that clearly Porsche figured it out and eventually introduced the PSE for those who wanted to enjoy that aspect of the "Porsche Driving Experience." But then came the 997.2 and that weaker PSE. To those you with it--is it as good a sound as that on the 997.1 engines?
I read recently that the 991.1 engines are getting a lot of attention in that area--favorable.

PSE on the Spyder is incredible. Night and day difference IMHO.
Haven't listened to the 997 so I can't comment but I agree that no PSE really takes a chunk of the personality out of the car.
I do like the fact that the PSE can be shut off too, very cool!

I test drove a .2 C4S in Nurburgring, and it definitely was A LOT muter compared to 997.1 C4S, even so I don't have PSE. The 991 sounds like has a better engine/exhaust tone, and IMO, that's the only plus with the new model so far.

Dan, here's my take on this......I had a 2001 996 and put a fabspeed exhaust on it and it sounded kind of cool and kind of loud....my nephew loved it but he was 14 at the time !
With my 2006 997 I left it stock and i really liked the sound...I thought it was loud enough for me. Now with the 2010 .2 I still love the stock exhaust...again it's loud enough for me....I actually wouldn't prefer it any louder. Maybe a function of being 63 years old!

Personally I feel both the 997.1 and 997.2 PSE sound nice, yet different, as they are.
The difference to me is the 997.1 EFI engine has more of the raw irregular old-school rumbling PSE tone, compares to the 997.2 DFI engine has a more refine and high-tech smooth PSE tone. The difference might not be as obvious at idling, but more so in high rpm. I guess it might be the characteristics of the DFI engine and the EFI engine?
Regards,

I had PSE on my 997.1. Obviously, I have it on the GTS (part of the pkg.).
I prefer the 997.2 version's sound. The PSE in its 997.2 iteration also doesn't seem to have the mid-range mandated "drop out" that the 997.1 PSE did.
Sound is pretty subjective, but I'm likin' the new one.
Probably doesn't hurt that the GTS is pumping 53 more HP than my non-DFI '06S, either.

997.1 stock in my underground garage sounds perfect to me.
I'd be interested in back-to-back comparisons of the sounds of the 997.1 and .2 exhaust sounds with and without PSE using the same equipment. It's hard to tell otherwise.

The new VW engine boss said the Carrera and Turbo models lack the sound, connection and emotion of the GT models. He said with the 991, they are striving to fix that problem. He specifically noted the Turbo's (his daily driver) almost complete lack of any good sound. I think I like this guy.
BTW, listen to the first 15 seconds or so of this video. What a sound!

I'll look for the video later, but there is a good video showing of the 991's growl and roar.

997 sound at idle isn't appealing to me. Sounds just like an old bug. Going through the RPM's with full throttle is another story though. I just wish it sounded better at idle, like my M3. The M3 engine sound in the garage upon startup gives me a boner like no other.
