That's precisely why I wouldn't own any water jacketed turbo engine. They sound like a Passat.

I haven't heard a 997.1 with PSE so I can't make a comparison. All I know is I love the sound of my 997.2 with PSE. I'm not out to make a "statement" with my exhaust; it's tone and volume are perfect for me.

I agree, I love the stock sound on my .2. It's loud enough for me. Plus, I have neighbors that I'd like to stay on friendly terms with.

There is no way around that I know myself. I imagine there is an attenuation algorithm within the circuitry which would have to be bypassed someway. It's to meet Swiss noise standards between 45 kph and 75 kph (28-47 mph). I do know that the 996 sport exhaust system is designed differently so we can't simply emulate their override system.

The only way around that is to disconnect PSE from the car system and get the independent controller from Gert (Carnewal.com). That is one reason (apart from being cheap) that I did installed PSE on all the time in both my former 996 and 997.1.

My experiences:

996: Stock exhaust, disappointing. Installed PSE, huge improvement!

997.1: Stock exhaust, much better, actually quite nice, but still lacking a bit. Installed PSE, nice improvement!

997.1TT: Stock exhaust, very, very disappointing! Found a good deal on a Milltek exhaust from a fellow RL'r, nice improvement. Still not loud enough for my taste, but a nice all around compromise and very definite improvement over stock.

917 with straight pipes - my idea of the ideal daily driver commuter car! (Screw my next door neighbor and his stupid fleet of Morgans!)

My Gundo hack really improved my .1. I think the manufactures have real challenges with getting the right sound. They are so constrained my noise limit requirements in different countries and the smog gear smothering the sound etc. It must be hard to actually get an engine to sound good. I will say my wife's Boxster with the top down is a wonder to listen to... I love dipping my foot into that motor!!

My 997.1 with the PSE option, sounds very very nice...great growl...totally different sound...hollow growl maybe?

My 993 with the motorsound option, sounds incredible when you climb into the high RPM's...its addicting

I actually like the stock exhaust on my 2008C2S. That , with the standard plastic intake manifold, adds up to a super sound experience for me.

I actually like to hear the sound of the motor rather than a sound that is predominately exhaust in nature. Although the exhaust sound is sweet at times esp. with burbles on downshifting and stuff.
