997 Carrera Exclusitivity? Exotic or NOT?
Okay guys/gals was talking with my brother on his way from the range (he was attempting to qualify as a licensed firearms instructor) and wanted my advice/help in his shooting...anyway we came upon the discussion of whether the current 997.1 and 997.2 will be/are now sports cars available to the all due to the current economic turmoil globally OR whether they are still exotic sport cars exclusive to most car buyers/drivers?
- I hold that the current economic environment does make the 997 more attainable (for many) and allow them to obtain the car on more equitable/easier terms where previous circumstance and/or inventory of new/used cars might have not been so accomodating.
- My brother counters by saying any 911's is an exotic car and exclusive no matter what occurs with the economy or the current inventory.
- I say that the 991 (whenever it is released) will likely also increase the 997 availability also unless Porsche shifts inventory/production to other markets.
- He says none of this matters. They [911's] are all exclusive not matter what the current model released is or pending release.
So who's right? We've now got a case of each other's finest beverage on the outcome of this poll. So who's right here...what are the prevailling thoughts here?
Disclaimer here...I am the 997.2 owner here..he drives a modestly nice Honda Pilot SUV but an additional disclaimer is that he has long coveted a Hummer and wants a Cayenne! LOL

The 911 in any form has never been an "exotic" automobile. Only cars that are difficult to keep in tune are exotic, like a V12 Ferrari, Lambo, or Maser. When it comes to "exotic" only something like a 959 or a Carrera GT could claim that title.

You are both right. Or neither of you are right....
911 is not an exotic. Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, etc. Those are exotics. But the 911 is somewhat exclusive. Even though used 911 prices are depressed, the % of people who can afford, and are willing to pay 40,50, 0r 60K dollars for a sports car is very small. Thus the 911 is exclusive.

Not exotic. A pure sports car. A car to drive daily, in all kinds of weather and situations. I love it. No where near the rodeo associated with the Astons, Lambos, and Fers. I live in a Porsche town and I can drive without a million looks.

Based on used car prices, the Porsche is not an exotic.
Based on perception, the Porsche is an exotic.

The 911 is not an exotic it's too mass produced and practical. It's also more than just the price, for example there are some very fast and expensive Bentley, Aston Martin and Jaguars and I don't consider them exotic. I think the car has to be exclusive, impractical and with limited production not just fast and expensive. Examples to me would be Spyker, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Pagani, Koenigsegg.

This topic has come up a few times on the 997 board in 2010 (including a poll):
https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...an-exotic.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...an-exotic.html
Poll Results: 109 NO to 33 YES
Personally, I think the public views it as an exotic, but I do not...

I don't think it's an exotic, but to me it's my supercar.
My car is in pristine condition, and I really doubt I could get the same car today for what I paid for it in 2009 (the days of the super discounts). I think it may be worth more than now than what I paid for it.
Just pricing out new build 911s, and they are not cheap. My only regret was not getting a Carrera S. other than that, I love my car as it is. it may have balloon 18" tires, but it rides great and i don't have to worry about my horrible roads destroying it.
I'm not looking to sell it, but enjoy it and over time and create a porsche collection.

"Exotic" does not always equate to "exclusive" although the terms are often interchanged when discussing cars - especially in some parts of the country. The 911 isn't exotic but it's targeted market segment does make it somewhat exclusive. Porsche is trying to change that with the introduction of new cars and by increasing the volume of cars sold - however the price of entry into any Porsche and the limitations of the sports car segment will still give some of the models some level of exclusivity. One person's 'exclusive' car however can also be more of a 'pedestrian' a car for others.

Gave my cigar buddy a test drive this weekend... he observed that it ruined him because he could no longer class his bimmer as a sports car... only as a sporty car.
It's not an exotic but most think it's out of their reach... used vehicle prices are making them attainable, however, most buyers only consider a new purchase. Maintenance is also comparable to BMW's. I've heard of exotic repair cost on Ferrari's... $5K to replace the clutch after only 3000 miles per a friend who owns one. It's now a garage queen.
