Default 11,780 miles and engine finally feels broken in

It just feels like it pulls and breathes better. The wail at 5.5k and above sounds nicer too.

Is this in my head or did your engine break in around this mileage?

It's still not broken in.

The tricky thing is to break it in without breaking it !

Lab and field tests have found an engine can require thousands of miles beyond its official break in mileage to be fully broken in.

While I believe you are experiencing the car's performance I suspect is it not because it suddenly become broken in but you are just driving the car more agressively because the weather's better, or you're just more comfortable with the car.

These cars are very high performance cars and it takes some of us some time to become acclimated well enough to wring some more excitement from the car and feel comfortable in doing so. The car (engine controller) responds by adapting a more agressive fuel/timing map and if the car is equipped with a Tip or Pdk transmission the transmission controller learns a more agressive shifting map.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Where do you live?
I can come by with a lockpick and make it feel broken in[to].

I bet you're finally used to it and wringing it out on the road. It's a good feeling yes?

Chef and Macster,

I think you guys are on to something. So, we bought a 2nd car (2011 Audi Q5) about a month ago and I hadn't driven the C2S in at least that much time. I think maybe I was just frustrated at following new car break in procedures for the past month that I took it out on my car.

When I bought my 2009 911S in March of that year the dealer mentioned that if I did not track the car it might "take 10K miles to feel right". He was right.

I did notice that the gearbox felt much better after after 10K and that the car stopped (almost) burning oil. I had broken the car in by US standards and drove it hard in the CA coastal mountains - but it did feel much better at 10K.
