After about 8 months of ownership and 3000 miles driven, I need to add some oil. The previous owner said he used Mobil 1, but I'm having a hard time getting an answer as to what weight/viscosity? Is it OK to add per the specs in the owner's manual, or is it best to add more of what's already in there?

I would not think that topping off with a different brand or viscosity would be an issue as long as it is within spec. Out of 9 qts of oil, the 1/2 you will add should not make the blend that far off in the entire pool.
0w-40 I think is the base spec. 5W-40 can be used as well if you can't find 0W-40 around.

The 0w-40 will taste better than the 5w-40,less filling

I'd consider changing the oil. 8 months and only 3K miles? I know, I am old school and opening a book of worms (like most oil discussions) but I would encourage 2x year oil changes given your limited miles. At this mileage rate it will be years till you hit the factory mileage interval. Time is breaking down your oil more quickly than miles, especially if those miles are low speed, not quite engine up to temp miles. Replacing oil is still cheaper than motor rebuild issues.
Use the owners manual and choose what they recommend.

0W40 is the spec, as stated in the manual so that is what you should use.
Change it if the oil has, or is about to exceed the stated oil change interval. Otherwise just top it off.

Thanks for the responses. I want to top it off just until I can find the time and energy to bring it in for a service, at which time I'll plan to have the oil changed.

In your situation that the previous owner used Mobil 1 oil, you can use either Mobil 1 0w-40 or Mobil 1 5w-40 even Mobile 1 5w-50 oil (all are on the approved oil's list).
Or, as long as the oil level is not dangerously low you could just take the car in for an oil/filter service.
On a related note when the oil is changed, even if one elects to go from one approved oil to another there is no need to 'flush' the engine to remove the 'old' oil before refilling the engine with the new oil.
Sincerely,
Macster.

Topping up with absolutely any oil is fine. All oils are made to be compatible, they have to be.
