One point I would like to add that may not have been mentioned yet
is that the cabin in the 911(and it's variants) versus the cayman
is more spacious. Althought the back seat may not be very usable for passengers, having that space makes the cabin feel much less confining and claustrophobic. Similat to a Mercedes sl versus a cl class. The CL and 911 interior are that much more open and airy and I think make the driving experience significantly more satisfying.

Also, without the firewall directly behind you in the 997, the seatback can mercifully tilt back quite a bit. I couldn't stand the upright backrest position in the Cayman-my mid back ached from it.

No sunroof in the Cayman was a deal killer for me. If I'm not going to be driving a convertible I've got to has a sunroof.

Like you, I went back and forth on Cayman S with PASM vs Carrera S and mentally debated that one handles better than the other, etc, etc. I finally realized that in the real world where you drive it as a car commuting to work in traffic or on highways, the fine degrees of difference in handling at the limiit don't mean squat. In my case, the look of a 911 and its torque when I apply the right foot outweigh any minor handling advantage a Cayman may offer. Caymans are great cars but the 911 is an icon -- sounds superficial and I guess it is, but the emotion does make a difference. I have owned three generations of 911 and it still makes me look back every time I park it. Hope this helps.

I went through that decision process myself. The reality is I like both!

My current situation is that I must have the rear seats but in a few years when my son can't fit back there, then it will be a different story. Also, I am hoping the next gen Cayman improves a bit on the design. The 911, to me, is a work of art. A day does not go by that I don't look at it in admiration.

I was away for a 3-week trip abroad and couldn't wait to get home to drive the car; it was nice seeing the family too

As for handling, I guess the Cayman is better but the 911 is not bad. We are still talking about one of the best sports cars in history here. How could it handle badly?

I think the following feedback you've gotten from others is the best: don't buy for the wrong reasons. Buy what you really want and can afford and don't settle because you will wind up questioning yourself every day.

Spend some time in both. For me it was a no-brainer. At 6'3" the Cayman was not a good fit while the C4S was.

Coming in late, no time to read the replies. If you plan to heavily track the car, you might enjoy the Cayman more due to it's mid-engine configuration. If mostly a street car, go with the 997 C2. The 997.2 C2 benefits thanks to the updates / upgrades and is comparable to a 997.1 C2S. If you were like me, I'd always dreamed of a 911 since I was a kid. When the time came to buy my first Porsche the Cayman was new and less, yet my wife convinced me to go 997.1S by saying "Ron, for all the years I've known you, you've talked about a Carrera, pointed out Carreras, etc... Get the Carrera!"
