Fine. Just make sure you Ragg Topp (or 303) it every other year, or sooner if it stops beading water. Don't wash your top with any soaps. Water only. Tape roller.

I have had several problems with the convertible top. Confused electronics - twice. Broken side cables - twice. Tired hydraulic cylinders - once(at great expense). In 6 years, 5 trips to the dealer. I would have reasonably expected this to be perfect. I would hesitate to buy another cabrio, new or used.

I've had Porsche 4 cabs since 2000 that I've used as daily drivers. They have always been left sitting in the sun at work and at an elevation of 4,500'. I've never had a problem.

I hope you don't mind if I ask another convertible top question! This is my second Cab and both of them have confounded me a little. When I am lowering the top, how do I know when the cycle is complete? So far I just have been holding the button until the windows start to raise slightly, then I just put them back down. Is there another way to tell when the lowering cycle is complete?

1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi....to about 13.

Or watch the windows move up.

Cabriolets today are substantially better than a coupe because of the many options that they afford! Top up, top down, and hardtop. Three cars in one!

The cooled seat help during the summer months w/ the top down.

The question is if you are a "cab guy" or not. I am and i have the top down as often as possible.
I have BECOME a cab guy and would never go back. Agreed with all comments, appearance best w top down etc... There is nothing like cruising with the top down. Believe it or not, I think I have less speeding tickets with it - or at least this is what I tell my wife. There's just more drama with a cab to keep you interested. I drive it year round in a Pacific NW, occasional inclement weather (right, ) and simply drop the top, hit the seat heater, and crank the dash heat and blast around. Ive noticed lately a bit of creaking when opening and closing so I'll get it serviced when I go in is month. The other odd thing is because with the top down there is no frame around the window when it is up, you do get window rattle. Quick fix for this is to drive with the windows down. Old school.

Thanks to all for the feedback - very helpful. I'm in the market to replace my daily driver (SLK 230) with another automatic and trying to determine on which direction to go.

The 911’s are wonderfully different cars than Mercs and BMWs. In a class of their own IMO.M Good luck w your hunt. Post pics are you go along etc...

Have you driven one yet?

I notice that going over off camber turns like slow driveway approaches the top creaks and crack loudly above the windshield. I have thought about spraying some silicon or other in the area- any suggestions?

Look into a front strut tower brace. This will help you. Nothing fancy. As low as $100. Some are $200.

I may have misunderstood you. Don't use a silicone spray. Try Aerospace 303 on the black rubber seal along the top of the windshield. Not competely sure what area your talking about.

Just a tip--the front strut tower brace is worthless on the 997. It's not needed. Years ago the 911 benefited substantially as they aged with a tower brace. They are no longer needed and contribute nothing.
