Default IPD intake plenums offer considerable gains

IPD intake plenums has just assigned SpeedMerchants Motorsports as a master distributor. I wanted to bring these plenums to everyones attention (in case you haven't heard) and the horsepower gains have surprised many sceptics.

Why does the dyno sheet show 19 HP increase for 3.6 997.1 but the description says 24 hp?

I'm assuming 24hp is at the crank.

I have one on a 3.6 996 and it works. But I dont have any comparison with just the ipd or with out. I was told it works well with a free flow intake and exhaust.
I have intake, exhaust and ecu and ipd and its a great set up all togather. I would do everything all togather again but not seperately.

other threads on this topic discuss how an ECU tweak also needs to be incorporated to "take advantage" of this upgrade, otherwise there's little or no noticeable change. thoughts?

and is the plenum install a relatively straight forward DIY item? from the pics and descrips i've seen, i cant really tell...

And aren't these about $1000.00 each? Parts only. Perhaps I can't read a dyno sheet but it appears to say for a 3.8 997.1 engine at 5100 rpm there is no gain at all.

There was another thread where IPD was promising dyno results for the 997.2. Have those been done? If so can you post the links? If not, how do you know it's a 14-15whp gain?

Put your car a dyno and run it while it is cold and take a reading. Warm it up by driving 10 miles and put it back on the dyno and you will have a HP increase for less than the cost of a gallon of gas.

There has been some testing here.

However, as you'll notice from the other comments and popcorn smileys that the IPD plenum has a muddy history with regard the the 911. If you have the time and want a good laugh/cry, depending on your perspective, much of the saga is here and here.

The short version:
  1. Greg (previously "RSSGREG" on 6speedonline, banned at some point, and apparently now a sponsor as "IPD Greg"?) offers to have the plenum tested on a board members stock car and the results posted to "prove" the plenum works.
  2. Car is tested at AWE (another sponsor) and fails to produce any results.
  3. Endless "butt dyno" comments from plenum owners.
  4. RSS has the plenum "independently" tested at another tuner shop, but refuses to answer whether the tuner is a distributor/reseller for RSS. The plenum shows positive gains.
  5. Another board member independently tests the plenum on his stock car, and the products produces no gains or negative gains.
  6. A "RSS Plenum Day" is hosted at GT Pro (another RSS reseller, I believe) where RSS "demonstrates" the plenum makes hp gains. The testing variables are questioned and never fully answered.
  7. 1999Porsche911 (Rennlist and 6speedonline resident "oil expert" ) spends many, many pages arguing technical details with Greg.

The bottom line is that most or all positive "test results" have come from RSS/IPD and/or their resellers (who have a vested interest) while most or all independent results (from owners or non-affiliated tuners) have shown little-to-no gains.

Caveat emptor.
