Default Battery Issue finally Resolved

I always wondered why such a fine car could go through 3 batteries in 35,000 miles, over 3 years. I bought the Porsche charger and even that didn't help.

Last year the dealer tested the car and said no problem. The curious problem was most evident on hot days on long drives of 50 miles. The battery would barely crank.

This is my daily driver so she never sat around discharging.

When I was at the dealer getting a track inspection I again complained, but this time to the tech, not the the service manager. The tech whiped out a mirror on a long rod. He observed that the "y" in the ground wire looked charred.

As the shop was almost empty they agreed to do a warrant replacemnt. Solved the problem and saved me $600. I asked to have the old part to post a pic. No dice there. I have heard there was a service bulletin but not a recall.

Hope this helps others. Mines is a 07 997.

That lesson is so hard to keep learned: check the obvious first. I learned it and forgot it about five times in my life so far.

Excellence mag. in their Oct. issue has an article on electrical systems and they mention battery cable problems on the 997. Nov. issue has part 2 of this article.

Hhubard, where is that "y" that he needed a long rod? I just changed my battery so I hope I don´t have this problem...

In some states they have to give you the part that is replaced if you ask for it.

Default Ground wire

was in engine compartment. The mirror was placed over then engine forward about 2 feef. My post was unclear. The failure was an alternator ground wire, not at the battery.

I never was shown the "y" which was only described as such.

Had same problem in GT3. Ground cable solved it. And it's cheap
