Default best tires for wet conditions

Hi,

I am slowly deciding what tires to select for next season - have anyone tried hankooks r-s3 tires in wet? I want to get them as primary street set as they are quite sticky in dry but how are they in rain? do they have an acceptable grip in wet conditions?

essentially I need that 'street' set to work as an auto-x/track 'wet' set as well as car sees very little street driving these days but i do not want to go with 'real' rain tires as they will get toasted on a dry road very fast so I need a compromise solution.

Several of my students have been using the Potenza RE960A's with some success...
I used the Michelin SX MXX3's with great luck in the wet/dry... These days the sizes are limited.

No experience with Hankook. I am actually quite surprised with how good PS2 is in the rain at 4/32 tread left, and since I live in Rainy Vancouver, I know a thing or two about wet driving!

I've also heard the NEW Pzero tires are good in the rain with their directional tread pattern.

I'd stick to N-rated tires, if not, the Continental DW has been rated AMAZING by pretty much everyone who've tested/reviewed them.

I've been extremely happy with the wet handling of my Bridgestone RE-11s. They're my street tires and rainy-day track tires and they grip really well even in monsoon/standing-water conditions. They hold up OK on the track in the dry, but don't shed heat very well.

to my surprise it does not seem re-11 have any options for 18" rims, all sizes are off from what it should be.

I'm purchasing a set of "Nitto Invo's " soon...they're said to be great in wet weather...and about 1/2 the price of PS2's. The Nitto website ie pretty cool, as are the various comments on this and the Turbo forum.

What sizes are you using? I think Tire Rack is lying to me - it's claiming the 18" wheels on a 2006 997 Coupe are 235/40R18 front and 265/40R18 rear, and these sizes are available in the RE-11 (Tire Rack is also claiming "Original Equipment size 1" is "305/30-19" - for all four!). If needed, you can generally step up or down a width without hurting anything so long as you do so on both front and rear.

You might look into the Yokohama AD08, as well. These and the RE-11 have very similar behavior, in wet, dry, etc., etc. Both are a lower temperature compound than, say, the R-S3 or the Kumho XS, and the lower temperature helps them significantly in the wet.

Having the 18" wheels is great - there are a lot more options for the 18 than the 19.

Absolutely disagree! I have a friend of mine with those on his M3 and he said they were the WORST WET TIRES he's EVER OWNED! They got NO CHANNELS for water to get out.

PS2's are the best tire that I have ever had on wet and dry.

'proper' sizes for 18" 8f 10r rims are 245/40r18 and 285/35r18 - front diameter must be around 25.5 and rear a bit bigger like 25.9 or 26.

265mm tires for rear are too narrow. i used to run 295 hoosiers on 10" rim but 285mm rubber fits best.

kumho xs are horrible in wet. yokos are also not fun, at last DE gu next to me had to take them off and put back toyo r888 and they were better than yokos on standing water.
so, I am still not sure what to do.

re-11 tires I see have weird sizing and diameters of 26.7" are too big.

Yeah totally recommend against those tires if you live in a wet climate. Great if you're in CA.

PS2, Sport Cups (N0,N1) or R888 all OK in rain (PS2 probably the best wet) and good in dry. If you want to get better in wet Bob Woodward will rain cut R888s for you - haven't tried them personally but shop I use says they are best compromise.

i wonder if r-s3 hankooks will essentially be same as r888 - it is also a r-comp tire and it has pretty good tread on it.

it is a shame that no one tried those tires. plus they are a bit cheaper than r888.

i had ps2 in 19" rims and do not really want to do it again, it is expensive and dry performance is not very good.

Not sure if R888 is better than PS2 in rain, when I was tracking in Nurburging the race car rental place used R888 for DRY only, and if it rained, they moved to street tires (can't remember what tires).

You basically can't have both. Any of the close to R-rated tires are best in dry and give up wet performance as they reduce water channels on the tread. PS2 and Pzero are good compromises, if not Yoko Advan AD08 *looks* like a good wet tire (tread pattern), and someone else recommended RE050.
