The HPFP is replaced AGAIN on my 997.2
First one was replaced in 08/2009, and about 10K miles later, it failed again. The first symptom was the long crank without starting the engine. I was told by the advisor that although the fuel pump has been re-designed, I did not get it since back then there were quite a few HPFP failures, so they just put another first gen in. But now I should have the 2nd-gen HPFP. Has anyone else got a 2nd pump too?

You're doing good. If you had a BMW 335i, you could be on the 6th or 7th generation HPFP...

Does a failed HPFP in the 997 contaminate the fuel system?
New VW TDI's have the same issue but it causes about $9K in damage when pump starts spitting out particles of metal that requires replacement of the entire fuel system.

Mine just failed on my over the weekend, I have a MY 09 with about 9000 miles on it. I had the same experience as you - hard crank over then it would just completely stall out and have no power. I had the HPFP replaced and this time they said it was a redesigned unit.

Initial symptom is a long crank, and might take 2~3 tries to start the engine. Left alone, it will start losing power on wide throttle or high rpm.
With the new fuel pump in place, I could feel the engine is peppy again, eager to rev.

I had a mid 90's BMW and I went through 3 fuel pumps myself (over 400k miles). After the first one I got quite good at changing them.
This isn't really a solution but I did notice that they lasted much longer if I always kept the tank half full. If you run the tank down to zero I think that's harder on the pump.

Had the same thing happen to my wife's 09 Cayenne S...it too had a hard crank and stall and then would run okay but sometimes seemed to want to stall and lost its pep. Took it in and diagnostics traced it to the HPFP. Replaced it and is now good to go. Hope my 09 Carrera S stays okay. But don't both cars use the DFI engine? So guess should be on the lookout for it too.

the same symptoms in my wifey's , '08 Cayenne GTS:
longer crack time before actually firing up
loss of power, bogging down @ 2500-3000 rpm
whats going on with these pumps? same manufacturer as BMW's?

My service advisor did mentioned that the quite a few Cayennes have the HPFP replaced as well. My first gen fuel pump lasted about 10K miles, I hope the second gen would last a bit longer, but it does calls in the question what it would cost to replace after the warranty expires.
