If you're running against a DCT with a 6 spd 911 it will be almost totally driver dependant based his/her ability to shift properly.

!? same could be said with a 6 speed M3 and PDK 911 !?

Why not compare manual vs. manual and automatic vs. automatic.

The cars are very very close. With equal drivers on a windy track the 911 probably wins.

My understanding is the stock M3 is really in need of a brake upgrade, just like a stock 911 is really in need of an alignment. The comparison of stock cars on the 'Ring is a little bit distorted when these mods haven't been made.

M3 in straight line, but just barely and it all depends on how you launch, if both 6-speed, then it's a driver's race, if M3 is DCT, then for sure M3 would have an edge.

On a track, it's a different story, 997.1 would be faster with an above average driver and can do a lot more laps before braking goes.

Case closed. Overall performance, hands down the Porsche is faster, regardless of what owners "feel" or "think".

i think if you were racing non S PDK 997.2 and 6speed M3 the PDK would win tho.
Car and Driver had a good article last year comparing the pdk in the 997.2 and DCT in M3. They choose the M3. I don't remember which car tested faster.

Who cares?

I drove an MDCT equipped M3 coupe before buying the 997.2 C4S . IMO the deciding factor was the fact that the Porsche was much more fun and involving to drive.

Both cars posted identical 4.1 sec 0-60 times. The BMW was 1.1 seconds quicker around Laguna Seca. The Porsche was a stripped 345hp base Carrera, no SC, no PASM, stock 235/265 tires on 18" rims, etc. They tried to keep the price down on the Porsche so as to be more comparable with the BMW.

That is what I thought we were discussing but I guess the focus is drag racing. We need to define "faster" I think.

I own a 997.1S and was between the two cars as I had owned 2 Porsches before and was open to a change. BMW has always been my second love but this E92 just does not seem as fun and as involved as the 997 to me. It seemed very heavy and very luxury oriented. I actually prefer the E46 M3 and was hoping that the E92 was going to be an E46 with a lot more power, not the case. Of course that is purely subjective. Both great cars.

IMHO, they are two different cars with about the same speed, handling, and braking. Choose the M3 for the practicality and all around good daily driver. Occasionally, take it out to the track and enjoy it too. Take the C2S for the driver's feel. It's just not as practical because of the rear seats. I agree with AG, and had hoped the e92 would be like an e46, but it's too sedate.

You missed the whole point of the OP. He wanted to know how he would stack up if he confronted an M3 on the street. My point was that transmission and driver will have a huge impact. I haven't any idea what trans the OP has.

I agree. But...confronting someone on the street doesn't provide an opportunity to extract either car's full performance. Therefore, nothing is decided or proven. One driver may decide to put more foot into it than the other, disregarding the dangers of street racing. Nothing is decided about which car is faster, only which driver dares to go faster on a public street/road.

Have both cars an 08 M3 6sp Coupe and an 09 997.2 w/PDK and sports chrono.
The M3 is my daily driver and the Carrera my weekend car and alternative fun car! My 2 cents...M3 is faster and more powerful...its a jack of all trades and does almost everything well and at a level you are comfortable with whether you are a novice or experienced track guy/gal. Much of the reviews state and show similar reviews. My Carerra is not as fast but handles alot differently, much more precision, less drama but requires more skill and attention but makes it all look easy! Its just wonderful to drive and is much more smoother than the m3. In fact its the smoothest car I've ever owned. Great car.

Both of em. Different in their approach but similar in capabilities...like a different set of shoes or a different shirt for how you feel on a specific day. Its just nice to have the option to own and drive both of em!
