Default 997 minor oil leak -> solved

'07 997.1 very minor oil leak, same area as RMS leak, but only a hanging droplet, attributed by dealer to bad IMS, is this possible? Reason I ask is that my impression was that when the IMS goes bad it goes bad fast!

Read forum posts and others experiences and I wonder if the oil leak was either not noticed or others had different failure?

Just keep an eye on it. It is a seep--not a leak, by their definition.

And they won't fix "seeps" under warranty only "leaks", right?

I took my 997.1 in this morning for service, and pointed out an oily dust pattern indicating leakage (my definition) of oil from the junction between transmission casing and engine casing.

Tech Advisor said they probably wouldn't touch it under warranty, because there wasn't an oil droplet hanging suspended.

He did perk up a bit when I mentioned that at last oil change I found over a dozen flecks of bright metal in the filter element, after a 5k miles oil change interval. About 35k miles on the car.

Ugh.

Mine is officially a "weep" and very intermittent.
I'm just hoping I can ignore it and that I won't be the one "weeping" later. :\

Just heard back from the Tech Advisor at the local Porsche dealership.

What I call an oil leak from the RMS/IMS area hasn't even risen to the level of a "weep" much less a "leak" in their lexicon.

Advisor said it was from "normal oil vapor", I politely retorted that it wasn't there 2 months ago (and we both knew that the car is a MY2005).

Does this affect DFI motors? Besides the know problems, like fuel pump.

I'd be much more worried about metal "flecks" in your oil filter than that RMS. That is NOT normal. There should never be visible metal in your filter. Something in there is getting chewed up. IMS bearing on the way out???

Failing IMS bearing is *exactly* what I'm worried about.

At next oil change I'll inspect the filter media again, and if I find more flakes I'll take them to the dealer for show-and-tell and see how far we get. Probably shoot for a similar oil change interval to the last one, e.g. 4k, so I can gauge trend better. Car is a daily driver, so that won't be too far out.

Porsche warranty expires in 8 months.

So my service advisor noticed some weeping from right valve cover. This led to a major service, engine removed, tranny detached and RMS, IMS and transmission flange seals all replaced under warranty. Estimated cost of the work: 5K.
Should I be worried going forward or is usual stuff? Now at 12,500 miles. Purchase an extended warranty? Reading this thread I am really glad it was considered warranty work. Never a drop of oil on the garage floor, nor does the engine burn any oil.
