Unhappy Money Shift

So I've had my car for a month or two and I've been driving it "like I stole it" from the day I got it.

Well today, I was accelerating onto the highway and I was up at about 6k rpm in 3rd and shifted to 2nd instead of 4th. I saw the rev needle spank up to 8k for a brief moment.

The engine did not explode and I got where I was getting to without incident.

So, what do I do? Forget about it? Cry? Pray? Have it looked at?

I'm feeling like a damn idiot right now...

If it is any consolation you are a damn *lucky* idiot.

That the engine continued to run without any signs of distress is a pretty good sign the engine suffered no harm. New theses engines have some margin to tolerate something like this, though of course how much margin there is varies some from engine to engine.

Forget about it. Nothing you can do about anyhow. Though you might use this experience to help you focus more on shifting.

Just so you don't feel too bad, I did something similar with my Boxster some several years ago. Luckily I caught myself just in time and released the throttle and shoved the clutch down as quick as I could. I had not yet released the clutch far enough to fully engage so I don't think the engine suffered any extreme overrevs and or suffered just a tiny few and not too high either. But realizing what I had almost done scared me no little bit.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Have it checked anyway but not in the dealer, depending on the type of overrev *how high the revs went) they might deny guarantee later on if car has any left.
But 99 car is fine if not, something between gearbox and engine would have RIPed.

what 911slow is saying is that these cars save over revs and they can be read from the diagnostic tool. Go and check it out, not at an official dealer, and see what type of overrev it was (type1,2,3,4,5 and 6). There are lists around, I have seen them on this forum which describe exactly the range of revs you hit. Anything above a type 3 or 4 is rather bad...

Buy this http://www.durametric.com/default.aspx
and check the overrev counts yourself. Worst case lots of hits in ranges 3 and higher could cause dealer to void warranty on any engine "stuff" and when you get ready to sell, buyers might stay away from car with overrevs.

The 'damage' event was recorded by the diagnostic system. However, you should just listen carefully to it now for awhile. It probably survived. But just keep a closer eye on things. At some point if it grenades, the record on this occurrence is in the computer, and the dealer will probably use that to turn down any concessions to you. (This is a big reason why Porsche put this on these cars--to protect them).

It's permanent - overrev info can't be deleted.

Yes these engines are stout but they have dynamic limits. The redline is there due to thermal/kinetic limits that are very real. I advise anyone purchasing a used car to dump the DME readings and never buy a car with Type 3 and above over-revs.

For those who are unaware an electronic rev limiter does not prevent mechanical over rev by shifting into the wrong gear which can cause crashing of the valve train into pistons and serious damage. The is operator error of course and not covered under warranty. The data over rev recorder is there precisely for this reason.
