I bought a large oil catch pan from Performance Products years ago when I owned a 1989 911. Air (oil) cooled, that engine held something like 12 or 14 qts of oil ! (Numbers may be a little off.) This large pan holds well in excess of that. This oil pan is very low profile and really holds a lot. I still remember laughing at their descriptor in their catalog about this oil pan--"You have not known excitement until you have drained the oil from a 14 qt. engine into an 8 qt oil pan!"
BTW, I also think this is one of the easiest cars I've ever changed the oil on. Do not have to raise the car at all.

Fast question: Will the filter wrench and crush washer for my 986 also fit my 997.1?
(To be sure, an oil change on a 993 is one royal PITA. And nothing was more exciting than realizing that the oil reservoir in the fender was just a touch bigger than the bucket I chose! )

I'm still looking for a better oil catch pan. I used the one recommended by Tim (gota911) and it does work very well with the larger opening. The large opening is wide enough to handle the high flow of hot oil out of the motor, so less hits the garage floor, but I filled the thing to the top. The small cap on the side of the container doesn't make a strong seal, so I had to use 2 and transferred the used oil back to the empty bottles quickly. It's the best one I've seen out there, but bigger would be cool.

To catch the little splatters I put the catch pan on top of a large sheet metal pan (like a really big cookie sheet) that I bought at Autozone. Helps if you don't have things quite lined up when the plug drops or if you drop the filter.
