So my engine number is M96/0569508315. Is it just numbers or something meaningful in the number besides year of manufacture? In another thread I read that the engine number matches the VIN serial number but that is not true in my case. Any info appreciated.

Therefore you have a 3.6 liter 997 Carrera engine. Serial number (sequential) is 8315. I can't tell you other stuff--Porsche has changed their number convention several times over the years. The engine number would never match the VIN either now or ever because the numbering convention is substantially different.
Finally, do not be concerned about whether the engine number shows the engine to be original to that VIN. Porsche ceased tracking engine numbers to the certificate of authenticity some time ago because these are considered to be mass produced cars and the engines are disposable. My CoA doesn't show the engine number.

When I asked Ric Knab (rknab@sunsetautogroup.com) of Suncoast Porsche, Sarasota Florida to run a VIN # decorder on my 2006 Carrera he came back with all the options listed including the brand of tires. It also included Engine Type # M9605 , the Engine serial # 69606039, Gearbox type G9701 & the Transmission serial # 1030894. It will surprise you with the information that he provides.
Absolutely have those things run. You will learn more numbers than you can stand! It's also a good idea to know all the codes that are supposed to be activated with your car.

My best and current info is this:
M96/05 is engine model number/code. The M96 is the family of engines, while the 05 is a more specific engine descriptor.
It describes size at least: For instance the 2.5l Boxster engine has a M96/20 number, while the 2002 and 2003 2.7l engine has a M96/22 number and the 3.2l S engine is M96/21 yet the 2003 and 2004 2.7l engine number is M96/23 and the 2003 and 2004 S engine number is M96/24. The 3.4l engine is M96/01. Sorry, but save for the Turbo/GT2/GT3 I don't have any info on the engines used in the Carreras.
6 is number of cylinders.
9 is engine version.
5 is year of manufacture.
08315 is sequential serial number.
Does anyone have an explanation as to why my engine is stamped M96/05, and my C of A says I have a M96/03? My car is a 2007 C2, build date of 11/14/2006.
I assume that you have a straight 997 -- not an S. Thus, it is a 6 cylinder, 3.6 liter engine. You will find that the certificate of authenticity is frequently incorrect. It really means nothing. In fact, the serial numbers on these engines mean very little. I think the M96 refers to the 3.6 engines. My S is marked "M97/0168621288"
I suppose that means it's an M97/1 generation engine of 6 cylinders, 3.8 liter displacement, produced in 2006, carrying a sequential serial number of 1288. (The 2 may mean n/aspirated)/
