Considering replacing my laptop on our cross country trip, this summer with an
Ipad 3G for use as a reader, e-mail and web.
Besides charging, can you use the USB port for music, in universal interface, and other stuff?
What works and what doesn't?
I have Nav, so that's not important.

Apples removal of the IEEE1394 supported 12v dc charge pin on ipods and iphones means that the fork-special-cable is needed to tap the 5vdc line for charging from the USB port. I'm not sure if that port provides 10vdc or not.
It depends, also, on what the iPad has.. does it look like an ipod/iphone via the standard apple idoc connector? If it does, then PCM should see it as an iPod (ie playback of music).

I believe the connector is the same, hence, it should show up like an Ipod touch.
It may charge slowly, very slowly if left off, and plugged into usb with dual cord.
I can be charged separately, via the power socket and apple-usb cord.
I keep reading new info, I just wondered if anyone has first hand experience!!

I've had the iPad for a few weeks. I don't believe a regular USB connection will charge it.The cable that comes with it does have USB on the other side but it's for sync purposes and not charging.
Having said that, I absolutely love the thing.
By the way, viewing this forum on it isn't that great because of the way the site UI is built out. Some icons get placed in odd places, making you have to scroll left-right to get to the right place.
Enjoy it. Laptops as we know them will be dead in 3 years!
