Rear Spoiler Deployment Facts
I have read many times that the rear spoiler deploys at 75 mph. However, this does not appear to be entirely accurate. According to the Product Information booklet from Porsche, it seems that this is only true for the 996. For the 997 (at least the 997.1) it appears the spoiler's function is also a function of the engine compartment temperature, is it will deploy at 50 mph if the engine compartment is warmer.
I'm not sure how common this knowledge is, as I don't recall coming accross this in any of the previous posts I have read on this topic, so I thought I would share it.

I doubt you will ever experience that in Canada! Also, keep in mind that the spoiler deploys at the actual speed of 75 mph and not the INDICATED speed of 75. (There is about a 2 mph difference).
Also, cabriolet tails go up further than the coupe tails--to compensate for the differences in the two roofs.
Perhaps an easier way to remember those two odd numbers (75 and 37.5 mph) is to convert them to metric--and then you'll better understand. 120 kph up and 60 kph down.

Just curious, how would the spoiler know the car has achieved the actual speed of 75 and not the indicated speed on the speedometer? Are you implying that the spoiler has its own speed sensor?

Its a minor detail about speedometers, nothing to do really with spoiler. Mfgrs make sure the speedometers slightly overstate the actual speed of the car - to avoid getting sued.

I was amazed at how accurate my speedo was. Had the GFs GPS in the car and it was always within 1-2 MPH (we were in the US) of my indicated speed on the speedo.

Yup. Very accurate in that it will ALWAYS be saying the car is going faster than actually it is by 1 or 2mph. IOW, It will never say the car is going 55, when it's actually going 56 or more.

I understand that the speedometer might not indicate the true actual speed of the car, but the original statement was that the spoiler does not deploy at the indicated speed of 75 mph. I would think that if the cars computer is programmed to raise the spoiler at 75 mph, then it goes up when the indicated speed is 75 mph, whether that is the actual speed of the car or not.

Unfortunately no speed is indicated but if the local constabulary asks I never exceeded 45mph. It can be deployed manually remember

You can FEEL it. the rear of the car actually gets pushed down by the downward force of the spoiler. It is subtle, but any real porsche enthusiast can feel when that spoiler deploys.

I believe in Canadian cars it's deployed at 80 Km/h, had no idea it's dependant on engine tempreture?!
