Good question. Will dump some in gas tank, see what happens. Could go blind though. See your mechanic right away

I have always thought the rear spoiler deploying with high temps is a good way to get out getting a speeding ticket. If the cop says your spoiler was deployed so you must have been doing at least 75 MPH, you say no officer, it deploys when engine bay temperature is above a certain level too.

It is the manual and should hold up in court as well.

10 ways to tell if the spoiler is up:

1) Put a picture of a naked girl under the spoiler, it you are being followed by a Ford F150, the spolier is up

2) put a canadian goose on the spoiler with his feet trapped underneath, when the spoiler goes up and the goose flies away, you will no longer see a trail of bird **** behind you

3) put a razor blade on the edge and a rope above this, tow a neighborhood kid behind the car, when the spoiler goes up at 75 MPH, the rope will be cut and the kid will fade in the rearview mirror

4) tie a rope with tin cans to the spoiler, when it goes up, the cans will no longer drag on the ground and the noise will stop

5) Roll the car over and then back at 75 MPH and see if the road rash is on the top or edge of the spoiler

6) tie a rope to the spoiler, run it under the car, over the hood and attach to the windshield wiper, spoiler goes up, wiper lifts off window

7) put tacks under the spoiler, drive at 74 MPH, when the idiot behind you starts to tailgate, hit 75 MPH and watch in rearview mirror

8) ask your boss is stand on the passenger seat (no shoes) and look out the sunfoof when you hit 100 MPH

9) put a picture of an accident under the spoiler, look for a lawyer trailing you

10) put Jessica Alba n the driver seat and... oh hell, who would care about the spoiler!

Nice. Did you get it with factory paint all ready to go? I'm looking to get the exact same thing, haven't researched much though.

Default Spoiler speed deployment

According to the Product Information booklet from Porsche, it seems that this is only true for the 996. For the 997 (at least the 997.1) it appears the spoiler's function is also a function of the engine compartment temperature, is it will deploy at 50 mph if the engine compartment is warmer.

I'm not sure how common this knowledge is, as I don't recall coming accross this in any of the previous posts I have read on this topic, so I thought I would share it.

Anyway to change the settings?
(I have a Techart spoiler on mine)

You can turn it on or off using a durametric pro or PIWIS. You can't 'change' the speeds at which it raises or lowers.

This matches what our salesperson at the dealership told us.

From the 2009 User Manual:
Engine compartment temperature under 122 °F/55 °C
• Spoiler extends at 75 mph/120 km/h and retracts at 37 mph/60 km/h.
Engine compartment temperature over 140 °F/60 °C
• Spoiler extends at 50 mph/80 km/h and retracts at 19 mph/30 km/h.

In my previous 2002 996.2, I could see the upper edge of the spoiler when raised. I guess either the 997 rear window or the spoiler dimensions changed.

This is quite an old thread but I figured this would be a good place to bring it up. Has anyone noticed that the rear spoiler will go up at pretty low speeds (20-25mph?) when you are accelerating hard? I saw and forgot about it in this video (jump to 2min):

You can see the spoiler start to deploy right before the 1>2 shift. I noticed mine did this today while I was testing my nest camera:

I definitely didn't push the spoiler button nor did I hit 75 or even 50 mph.

Yes. On hard acceleration runs it will start to deploy. I guess it assumes you will be exceeding 75 mph before you’re done.

i drive by a couple buildings with mirrored windows on my commute and in the summer, I often see my spoiler deployed at lower speeds because of the temperature.
