Default Why jack front or rear?

Is really necessary to lift the car at all? Has anyone done an oil change with the car completely on the deck? I can imagine it might be necessary to jack the rear for access, but why jack the front end? (Yes, Captain Obvious, I understand it is so the car will be level--the question, more to the point; is the car's level relevant?)

Kudos, Todd. Very nice write up. One day I do hope to change my car engine's oil...

Yep I do it that way, the only problem is finding a drain pan that can fit under the car, and hold 9 qts. And I own a four post lift.

Guys--just cut down a 5 gallon paint bucket. (You can get one of those orange ones from Home Depot).

I inscribe the inside of the bucket every 2 quarts so that later you can measure precisely how much oil you drained.

Default Socket size for oil canister removal

It looks like you can just use a socket to remove the oil canister / cover.

Is it 36mm?

Thanks

THAT is very cool. I want one of those!!

Side (but related) question: In hearing about getting your Porsche Book "stamped" for svc work, etc; what bearing does doing your own oil changes have on that? What kind of info do they require for documentation? I'm one of those guys that keeps a personal book of any and ALL maint done to my vehicles, complete with dated filter box stubs, receipts, etc to corroborate parts & oil purchases, etc... and yes, 2-3k miles is the intervals where I change my oil. (I prefer 2k miles.) Just wondering how Porsche NA views this.
