Default Who would want this PCM feature: 'screen off'?

I know the PCM 3 has it buried way down in a sub-menu, to turn off the screen.

I'm thinking, it would be very useful to have this be right on a hardbutton, such as double-clicking the volume (one click=mute audio, double-click=off the display). Then any hard button press or touch on the screen turns it back on.

My thinking is:
  1. I don't always need that thing on and it can be distracting at times.
  2. Those LCD's are probably expensive to replace, and replacing them 10 years down the road when they have burn in and/or stuck pixels or the backlight is worn out is even more expensive.. so why have it running all the time when you don't need to?

Edit... so the PCM2 has it (does it totally turn off the display or just turn off the backlight.. where pixels still get used and worn over time?)

But the PCM 3 doesn't have such a button... unless I'm really just having a Monday experience today.

And I'm talking just the screen here. I can turn off the PCM 3 totally too, by holding down the mute button for a very long press.. but that shuts everything off... no music anymore.

I thought there was a button that turned off the display. I don't have my targa any more, but I thought there was a light bulb button that turned off the display completely.

UPDATE: Mine was a PCM 2

The PCM2 does have a button on the right side which allows you to
completely turn off the PCM.

i thought it was weird as well, same with "turn off touch screen"

i wish the "porsche" screen was on longer on my 997.2 tho, my 997.1 stayed on like twice as long and i kinda liked it.

I always think that the PCM display/menu was designed by some aviation engineers... very complex menu maneuvering, yet very organized once we figured it out, very technical display data, and kind of professionally cool.

Everytime I start my car, I feel like a pre-flight check... PASM On, Sport On, Lift Up, Bloothtooth connection Check, Music track Check, Shift neutral, check rear mirror, check side mirrors, Reverse gear Engaged, backing up driverway, ....

Regards,

I would like to have the option of keeping the "Porsche" logo on
all the time

Just put in a good CD and visually enjoy the history of the crest on the dash.

I generally leave the map up when driving but at night I sometimes like to just turn the screen off on my PCM2 system. It keeps it darker in the cockpit and less distracting.

Yes, however, you're kind of a dark and mysterious creepy guy, Dan.

I don't know that I'd call probation officers "friends."

I don't really like to be distracted when tracking the car. Ergo- PCM off. Used it just a week ago. I thought it was a very thoughtful feature.

PCM INFO / Multifunction Wheel / Display Dark - sets the programmable button to toggle blank display.

Yeah, thats a great idea: IF Porsche had not been so narrowminded as to not offer multifunction on the 2009 6spd cars with sports wheels.

So for you multifunction PDK guys, I guess its groovy.

For us 6spd guys with 2009 cars, or those without multifunction wheels, we need to navigate down into the menu system while driving.

I had to order my wheel and have them install it - maybe you can do the same - I've seen posts about doing this. Of course, that's a lot of coin if all you are looking for is a dark screen...

What it comes down to is that these cars are missing many little conveniences - or charge more for them and require sometimes a special order - than a typical car these days. Somewhere between purist 911 and beverly hills cruiser. I think my car - any car - should have auto dim mirrors - for heavens sake, but whatever...I still love this car - little nits and all.
