Default Fair price?

Hi all.

I have been on the hunt for a Targa and I have found one. This is a 2008 Targa 4S, CPOed, 13,000 miles and heavily optioned. Its original sticker was $115,000. What would be a fair price to pay for this car from the Porsche dealer? Thanks in advance, I sincerely appreciate the assistance!

Regards,
Frank A.

You can't go by sticker much. Early in 2009 dealers were discounting the heck out of 2008 Cabs, some dropping price $30K.

Whether this car sold for sticker or discounted to me doesn't matter: I consider it a discounted car.

Once dealers start low-ballling specific new cars out this sets the price bar lower going forward for these particular cars is the way I look at it.

Thus I look at the Targa as being a $85K maybe car "new". Car 2 years old so its value assuming the $85K price being dealer cost when car sold I'm thinking car worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $62K.

Please note this number off top of my hand with help of HP calculator. I have not done any look ups to see how many of these cars available, say from MY 2007 to 2009 or if 2009 major model change from say 2006 to 2008 so that price could be a bit high or a bit (or way more than a bit) too low.

Get on www.autotrader.com do a search for 2006 to 2008 Targas any distance from your zip and see how many turn up and what prices/condition (mainy mileages) are.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I see prices thrown around and sometimes feel like we may have paid $5k or so too much for our vehicle but then remind myself that when we were looking we were being very selective in our search. We had to have a specific exterior color, interior color, had to be a cab, had to be a 4s, had to have nav, had to be manual, and the list goes on.

What we ended up with was a vehicle exactly as we would have optioned it had we ordered it new. That to me is worth something.

My point for mentioning this is that if your search is very broad, you may get a better deal but a better deal on a car that isnt really what you wanted isnt that appealing to me. So if the car is exactly what you want and your criteria is very limiting you may need to account for that also.

That said, low $70's seems right on. Good luck.

I have a 2009 Targa 4S that I will be selling or trading in late Aug or Sept.

Malachite Green Beige Int. 6speed List about same 115K has 5150 miles dealer has given let me keep and drive up to 10 K miles before Turbo S Cab comes in. They are offering me up to 80 K trade.

Still a big hit. Said they would sell thru them so I could still get the discount on taxes. (sales Tax that is)

Frank - I've been looking for a 997 Targa as well - we have likely been looking at a lot of the same cars. I've missed out on a couple of them because I underbid just a little too much. My experience so far is that they have been selling for right around the 'Clean' trade-in price on NADAguide.com, from a delaer or a priveate party. For what you are describing, NADA prices it at 75,800 with auto, 74,500 with 6spd. Add 2k for CPO. Discount it if it is an unsual color (red/yellow/gold, etc.).

Right now I'm looking at one where they were asking 4k above NADA, and came down to NADA when I bid below. Have not had time to do much more on it since then.

KBB has been pricing them about 5k lower, but I have not seen any sell at the bluebook price, either private party or dealer.

Are you looking at the gray one in Austin? That one is already priced below the numbers above. Nice car, would have gone for it as well, but it's an automatic. I would hope you could get the car you are describing in the low 70s, but I'm just telling you what I have run into so far.

There's what I've got. Please let me know whether you end up buying it or not, and what your negoatiating experience was.

Derek

richc:

I looked at a silver California car that was heavily optioned. The dealer came down to $80k + transport to MI. Seems high to me. What does everyone think?

bluebear:
I did look at the silver one in Austin. They started that car at $83k. When I contacted them about the car, they told me they wouldn't take less than $83k + shipping. A short while later they lowered the price to $76. I called them again and they said they wouldn't take less than $76k + shipping. They then lowered the price to $74k. I emailed them on the price drop and they said they wouldn't take less than $74k + shipping. Pretty amusing.

Happily I am looking for a tip car, so we will not be stepping on each others toes. Good luck on the search.

Frank A.

Frank A.:

I've been looking around for a pdk myself but don't plan on buying for at least another year as I wait for prices to drop even more. However, I did come across this. Manhattan Motorcars has a CPO 2009 Targa 4S. It's got 9145 miles and it's black on black. They're asking 80k. You can find more specs on the dealers site or thru the porscheusa search.

Good luck on your search.
