If the max torque area is around 4500 RPM (give or take) and you SHIFT up at that point to the next higher gear, where do you think your RPMs will be after that shift? They will be considerbly BELOW 4500 rpm, due to the different gear ratios. You optimally (for true exploitation of your best torque production) is to shift it higher so that when you are in the higher gear the RPMs have only fallen off to about 4500 rpms so that when you punch it again (as you continue to accelerate) you are in the peak torque range to the maximum extent possible. If you shift at 4500 rpm, you wind up lugging the engine and asking it to accelerate when it is BELOW the peak torque range.

Ideally, as you are working your way up the gears you keep the RPMs up sufficiently with each gear change to keep the engine speed up high enough to avoid lugging the engine.

Fortunately, with a 3.6 or 3.8 liter engine, we have substantially more torque than ever before in a 911 engine and so we actually can drop the rpms lower than ever before -- but you still don't want to ever accelerate from below 2000 rpm.
You`ve got some nerve to lecture people in such style. So to you there is only one thing I can say - RTFM.

If your engine is not capable to react promptly at accelerator after 2.5K rpm - you need to fix it. "Lugging" for 997 engines would apply to keeping your car at 6th gear with rpms between 1K and 2K.

Also no one here speaks about acceleration. If I want to "accelerate" - I have my modded 7500 rpm redline mark for upshifting. We here speak about cruising and for calm cruising 2.5K-3K rpm range is ideal.

If you do not like it here - there are plenty of other places to go. No one keeps anybody anywhere against their own will. It`s a free world.

Some people just tend to forget their manners when they communicate via web but in fact it is no different as if we all were sitting in a nice cafe and were having a friendly chat. There is no reason to get personal.

I actually re-worded what I wrote, but you were quick on the hammer.

Like I said - we are not fighting here over some holy cow. It is just a forum.
If anyone would just count up to 10 before writing up some harsh words - everything would be much easier and less stressful. Anyway, it is all not worth any fights anyway. I am not hammering anyone. All I`m saying - each of us got to respect yourself and respect others in same way and everything will be tip-top.

In the year I've owned mine the only driving I've done has been suburban streets at 30-50mph. At first I shifted it around 2200-2400, and cruised at 1600-2000. It didn't feel like it was lugging in the least...still plenty of torque down there for sedate driving...not mashing the pedal in 5th @ 1400 of course. But as time went on I began to up my rpms until now I'm shifting mostly 3000-4000 and cruising at 2400-2800, and to my big surprise the gas mileage actually went up a little. I take that to mean I was under-revving it before even if it didn't feel like it was lugging.

Side note: there is no upshift light on mine, so either it's broken or they didn't have it on the '05. Either way I'm glad. It sounds like a distraction...and an insulting one at that

(Like the cars with a voice that says: 'The door is a jar'. That's nonsense. The door is a door!)

Speaking of Edgy's contributions to the 997 thread, I think you will find that the vast majority of us that read regularly, value his opinions. Using the words pompous and know it all do not apply to him at all. Methinks some newer members will change their minds in due time.

Dan is not lecturing. Dan is giving from his experience of many Porsches - far more than most forum users have ever driven.

The tone of this forum has changed no doubt.

+1000 Also, me thinks that the fact such "newer members" with attitude all seem to drive macho American cars......hmmm...might there be a trend here?

If I'm spirited (which is not what you asked), then 2k+ rpm (may be 3k, 4k, 5k).

If I'm just getting from A->B, the around 1.5k to 1.9k.
