$600 for first oil change!

My kids are grown now but the rest of the stuff you mention is the same reason I still like to change my own oil; just enjoying fooling around with my car. BTW, my first Porsche was an '84 Carrera 5sp, ruby red metallic with burgandy leather and f/r spoilers. Loved that car and had it 13 years. So I've had some experience on the air-cooled side of the fence...

And, yeah those cannister BMW filter housings are a bit tricky with the long carriage bolt running through them. I would think 997.2 would be even quicker given the filter housing is on top rather than below?

Man NOO WAAAY. I change the oil myself for under $100 including oil, filter, drain plug and washer. Takes me an hour taking my time and doing it right. Biggest hassle is disposal of the old oil properly at the local gas station. $600 ah only if they threw in some Porsche Design collection stuff and a Porsche chrono each time! It's an easy DIY and relaxing to me as clay bar/wax and detailing my wife and my cars. But if you've got it like that then go ahead...but in these times I'd say a fool and his/her disposable income is soon parted! LOL
Seriously I'd try an independant shop 1st before that...your dealer is not a stand up guy!

I literally just (on Tuesday 2/2 to be exact) had a 10k service done at Chambers Porsche in Burlington and it was $299.00 Pricey for what is done (i.e. glorified oil change) but nothing like that insane $600 you are being asked to pay. I would NEVER pay that.
I live in downtown Boston so doing it myself really wasn't an option for me. God knows I've changed enough oil and brakes (even an odd carburetor!) in my life that I'm totally cool with having someone else do it . . . particularly with the crazy long oil change interval (no, I would never wait 20k miles) with these cars.

oil service indicator reset
A question for those who do their own oil change: is there a way to reset the service indicator on 997.2 cars? I have always done my own oil changes on various cars and usually there was a way to reset the service indicator, but I wonder if that's also possible with Porsches.

This topic surfaces every few months...I am waiting to hear from the gold and diamond
Rolex watch owners...you know the ones who say "my time is too valluable...bla,bla,bla". We at the aircooled section just love to read these posts. I have six cars...imagine $600 x 6 x 2xper year=$7200....assuming they wanted to charge me the same for the other cars as my 997.

So the guy with 6 cars is giving **** to the Rolex wearin', 997 drivin' guys who don't change their own oil? Hmmmmm......

For those of you in the philly area, I took my C2S to theporschespecialist.com
for oil change plus other things. I was charged $120 for oil change, $80 to install an IDP Plenum, and $80 to install the short shifter. My car was even washed and vacuumed. Kevin is the guy that owns and operates in this shop; he is the real deal.

Of course not, appears to be ~$40 - $95/hour depending on work done at local dealerships.
Rietzl Porsche reminds me of when I first moved here from Newport Beach, CA and got quotes on lawn mowing. The prices were crazy compared to California. The response was they can only mow lawns 7 months out of the year due to the cold weather, but needed to charge enough to cover their business on a yearly basis. WFT?
Aside from flat out ripping off their customers Rietzl probably figures most Porsche customers don't come in often enough for service, so they can justify screwing them over. What Rietzl doesn't comprehend is that those same customers will not be back for service, future car purchases, or be a source for positive referrals.
As a dealership Rietzl is a joke. Several months ago the owner told me how loyal their customers were, and that they are willing to pay more to do business with Rietzl vs. paying less at other far more competitive local dealerships. I looked at this lady thinking what planet does she live on, price is ALL that matters when buying a car. The successful dealerships understand that price and great customer service are paramount. Fletcher Jone's Mercedes of Newport Beach is the best example of a dealership offering the best prices and unparalleled customer service. Fletcher Jone's will wash you car for life at no charge, and feed you free Starbucks coffe while you wait. My Wife even had her nails done at their professional salon while waiting for her car to washed a couple times.
Several months ago my Wife took my Porsche into Rietzl for a recall and they had no one to give her a ride up the street to work even though I confirmed ahead of time this would be no problem, and they didn't wash the car. She was pissed. Rietzl is one of the worst dealerships I've dealt with, but the $600 oil change does surprise me nonetheless.

Thanks so much! I can probably do it myself without any problem, done lots of work on cars myself, but it might be fun hanging out, so I might take you up on that.

I've found oil change prices vary by almost 2X the cheapest at the dealers shops. It pays to shop around. I've often wondered if the shops charging the big bucks don't have special services they don't tell us about - until we're there.

Living in a one horse (dealer) town we don't have the option of taking the car somewhere else for warranty work. I changed my oil myself at around 2500 miles. When it is time for my first service I will ask them what else is done other than the oil change and then decide whether to take it in. I looked at my business partners receipts for his 2006 C4S and it's a $500+ charge anytime he takes it in.
I will need them to reset the service indicator at some point, we'll see if they want to charge for it.
As others have discussed and illustrated, it's a simple DIY but having grown up outside of Boston I can understand why it is not something to do in an unheated garage.

MA Guys - Does Prime seem to be the best option? FWIW, I liked the sales staff when I was shopping there.
I have Herb Chambers Boston near my residence and Herb Chambers Burlington near the office but according to others they are pretty bad.
Also, JW911, could I take you up on the oil change "watch and learn" offer? I'll bring beer!

That's almost true - you can spend a whole day driving and taking the ferry to Victoria to visit the other dealer!
I have ZERO respect for the loca P-dealer of whom you refer. I had an issue with starting my old 986 Boxster with a dead battery. I phoned the dealer and they said I had to have it towed in as only they could open the boot as it required partial rmoval of the front bumper. When the tow-truck driver arrived he was flabbergasted at what I told him. Within 2 minutes he had connected a cigarette lighter battery charger and had the boot opened and was jump-starting me. He charged my something ike $30 for the service call. I was so #$%^%$^&%^%$##@ MAD at that dealer I swore he would never see my business. Extreme incompetence or unethical practices- either way totally unacceptable.
...and $180/hour... really? Is that the average labor rate there?

Agreed completely with you. It is extremely sad that such an amazing car should have such a poor dealer locally. I got stranded with a flat tire in Portland in November, and the Portland dealer was SO HELPFUL (Sunset), felt like I've bought dozens of cars from them. I am thinking of planning my car maintenance and road trips to Oregon together!
