I'll be the exception... I'm actually very happy the the fuel efficiency of my '08 997S. I'm certainly not gentle on the accelerator once the car warms up and I do spend some time on the freeway but I routinely avg. 19 - 20 mpg in mixed driving and routinely see high 20's on road trips. For the kind of performance these cars have, the fuel efficiency is nothing short of amazing.

And I'm told the DI motors (esp. with the PDK) are notably more fuel efficient still.

Mine which is a 3.6 with a standard, gets me overall 19+ in daily driving, which is a 7-mile one-way commute over flat roads 30-45mph speed limits, with traffic lights about every half mile to mile. No traffic jams and the temp is usually 75-85F. What surprised me is that when I first got it I drove it like a Honda Civic, upshifting at around 2000-2200 and often getting it into high at 45mph, and it got worse mileage than now that I shift it at 3000-3500 and rarely even get to 5th. So now I have a little more fun and get a little better gas mileage too. But as to frequent fill-ups, I think that's because of a small tank. My Mercedes got 21 over the same driving, so not much better, yet I didn't have to fill it up nearly as often.

I am now averaging 19 mpg mixed. It was as low as 16.7 mpg for the first several years. That's with a 3.6 tip and a heavy foot. My Benz gets about 21 mpg with a greater proportion of highway driving.

The wide variations reported in fuel consumption for the same car is as mysterious to me as the wildly different oil usage that people report.

Sounds about right. I get a lot better mileage on highways.

I just WISH we got real-time MPG reading on Porsche. My Audi had it was it was GREAT to find the PERFECT speed/gear on long cruises for best fuel economy.

Default 2009 base carrera 6spd MPG

Car is my DD. Commute is 35 miles. 5 miles 25-50mph roads, 30 miles 70-80mph freeway, rare traffic. I seem to get somewhere between 22mpg-30mpg per tank. When I calculate based on gallons/mile I usually get 22-24. Nav based computer always seems to get 24-30mpg (most optomistic). Dash based that I reset with each fill up is 23-28mpg. Funny how all are off. I usually hit high RPMS 6-7k a few times each trip for fun but otherwise am cruising in 6th. No oil consumption for me after 6kmiles.

Ethanol is hygroscopic. There may be water at the bottom of the tank. It is best to keep the tank full with minimum humid air in it.

Ethanol is bad for cars, for the environment and for the economy. Let's get rid of it.

Good point. OTOH, the "trunk space" is already so small.

UGH! all these compromises just to drive a car which makes me risk getting cuffed-and-stuffed and lose my license everyday.

I'm more jealous of your outside temperature gauge, Dan.

Well, in truth, lately in California, it's been pretty nasty. I've had nearly 8 inches of rain since Sunday night and the OAT is presently 45ºF! (That's cold for us!) Plus, a couple of tornadoes have touched down nearby. Lost about 10 boats near the harbor in the "Fool's Anchorage!" (outside the pricey harbor slips)

My daily commute is 12 miles each way over mainly city streets (20-35 MPH) and I get 19-21 MPG. On the highway at between 75-85 MPH I get 27-28 MPG in my 2009 base car.

I run it down to about 1/4 tank before fill ups. On a newer vehicle with a plastic tank and good fuel it shouldn't be an issue.
