Default PPI needed if CPO?

I posted this in the other 911 forum here on rennlist, but I think it probably should have gone here, so I will also post it here if the mods don't mind.

Hi all. I am new to the forum and am looking to purchase my first Porsche. I am looking at a 997: either a Targa 4S or a C4S, but that is a whole different issue as I have read

I am in Michigan and looking to buy either a southern or a west coast car. If it is not CPO, I will get a PPI. If it is CPO, do you suggest that I still get a PPI, or will the CPO be sufficient? I will be buying it sight-unseen. Thanks!

Regards,
Frank A.

absolutely. Especially if you get a targa.
It will be the best $200 you ever spent.
My car is CPO'd and I still got a PPI.

Yes and ask to stay next to mechanic if you can so he could point his finger and show you all those spots he looks at - water pump, RMS, IMS seals locations, suspension spots, etc.
Don`t forget to do DME scan.

What da heck is "CPO?"

I must have forgotten when I had the head injury that I can't remember I might have had unless I'm making it up and don't know it.

CPO is a little neat thingy that allows you to drive in to dealer and get new water pump instead of slightly leaky old one for FREE.

Okay, I guess I better go poke a hole in my water pump right now and head over there to find out that the letters "CPO" stand for.

Certified Pre-Owned.

The car goes through a 100-plus-point inspection at an authorized dealership and the factory warranty is extended to six years from the in-service date or 100k miles.

It all depends. If the car is at a dealer and they will CPO it, then a PPI is totally wasted effort because the CPO process is a PPI and then some. You'll get the report that goes through over 100 points they check, inspect, test, etc. On the other hand if you are looking at a car that is owned by an individual that is a CPO car, but went through the CPO process previously, then I'd get a PPI to see what has happened since CPO.

In both cases I'd get a DME readout to see the over-revs to make sure the engine wasn't abused.

Has anyone been able to get their own 997 CPO'd (at the owner's cost) to get the warranty renewed? Or does this apply only to cars on sale at the dealer's lot? I'd spend up to $4k to get my car CPO'd if possible, just to get the warranty extended - much better IMHO than purchasing some extended warranty that won't cover near as much!

Yes, you can have the dealer extend the warranty. They can do it any time before the warranty expires. It may need some work in order to qualify though and it'll probably set you back about $2K per 2 yrs if I'm not mistaken.

Check with your dealer.

Thanks. I actually purchased my p-car from a non-Porsche dealer. Would or could any dealer do this, even if the car wasn't purchased from them?
