As to break-in, I believe in a break-in oil service and others don't (that's cool).
Count me in. Next round's on me.

Interesting discussion....at the s2000 board we went over all of this a few years ago. I broke in my s2000 and dumped my break on oil at 600miles(a honda no-no). Break in oil on the s2000 is packed with moly so I got a can of Mr. Moly for the refill. My s2000 is stronger than most s2000s and runs really well. This may not apply to the Porsche initial fill, according the the Mr. moly web site it does(need more info to be sure). I leak no oil and burn no oil.

Burning oil is a common problem for the high-reving s2000 motors.

All: Start here:

Ignore the marketing speak about buying Amsoil.

The oil journals on S2KI.com are very helpful....Road Rage was a tribologist (-the study of the effects of friction on moving machine parts and of methods, as lubrication, of obviating them.)

Looks like the people are very nice on this forum. My 911 is on the way...

Base stock of the oil is the key to understanding the issue. Understand the base stock and you understand your fill interval. Cheaper oil base...shorter oil life and faster breakdown. The cost of the oil is sometimes independent of the quality of the materials.

OCBen- I am sure you will use some sort of argument ad hominem, which you have already demonstrated in this thread. Please point out that I have not been here long enough to have the right to post or something along those lines.

As someone who orders and reviews oil analyses on a pair of very expensive boat diesel engines regularly, I would point out that you have to know what you are looking at when you receive the oil analysis results. How many hours on the engine, what kind of use, etc. The expected values for metals in the analysis are different in a young engine that is still wearing-in from those in a fully broken-in engine in normal use. The presence of some wear metals in a very young Porsche engine is just expected. The particles of sufficient size to cause damage to bearing surfaces are being removed by the oil filter.

Nothing to see here; move along ;<).

Exactly. The strength of oil tests is frequent and regular analysis spotting changes over time in the same engine(s).

A pair of engines delivering the same service, like in a boat or aircraft, would be even better suited.
