Default 2nd gear pop out?

It's probably operator error but anyone else have 2nd gear pop out? I've read about them on the 996TTs but not sure if it's an issue with the 997s.

It doesn't happen consistently so it may be when I'm not shifting completely into 2nd from 1st.

Just curious.

If you have shifted into the gear fully and it pops out ( e.g. on deceleration) it may be caused by a worn synchronizer.....assuming the gear shift mechanism is properly adjusted.

It doesn't happen when I downshift. It seems happen when I upshift slowly/lazily. My car does have Porsche's short shift kit so maybe that's the culprit.

That could be the issue, but I would be surprised if it was. There are a couple of things that need to be adjusted internally that will resolve this issue for you. I would recommend doing so before you problem gets worse, and more importantly more expensive.

I would be happy to discuss it with you in more detail though.

Happy to help,

Only you may be able to answer the question. Are you hard on shifts? Are you one who allows the synchronizer a moment to work, or do you just force it along? Mileage?

This has happened before. You should have your dealer check it.

Nota Troll.

Take that car in NOW for service.

I had the same issue in my 993 Turbo R. I learned a lot about the issue and ultimately learned how expensive it is to get repaired! Get it fixed under warranty and keep all documentation.

If you want to call and chat about my experience, just PM me.

Dan - I have 22k miles. I don't drive super aggressively. Typically I drive it like a normal human being. Having owned one of the most problematic transmissions in the world (Alfa GTV) I'm pretty good about waiting for shift to slide in positively.

Patrick - I called my SA to arrange an appointment. It's not typical but I have noticed it. I wish I had your problems with a 993 Turbo R.

I think it could be short shifter related. It you just make sure you have really pulled it down and to the left you should be alright--but if you sort of pull it down easily you might just not be getting it all the way home. The short shifters are a little notchy when new and especially when cold. Definitely keep after the shop on it.

Could be the linkage was not adjusted correctly when the short shift kit was installed, so you're not actually getting the selector all the way into 2nd gear. If so that would be an easy adjustment.

It happened to me once the other day - i was being lazy on the upshift though. I blamed it on that

I've had the car for 2 years - 18K miles w/ B&M ssk.

Never happened to me on 997, however, I had that happen in my Audi, after a 2-day weekend tracking. Synchros were worn out, and basically the only thing I could do is to rebuild the tranny.

That was too expensive for the car, but changing the fluid helped quite a bit as some burrs and they wore off and fluid change made things much better and smoother.

I suspect yours is more of an adjustment issue with short shifter.
