Whistling wind noise 997.2
I haven't had much time to drive the car since getting it a couple of months ago. I took it out for a spin yesterday and noticed that even at low speeds (40 mph), with windows up and down, there is an annoying amount of wind noise which is causing a horrid whistle. The noise only worsens with speed. Has anyone had anything similar happen?
I intend to call the dealer but if it cannot be sorted out, the car goes! It's that bad.

Nothing w/ top and windows up. W/ top and windows down there is a modest amount of whistle that comes through the outside mirror, but even this is intermittent. If it's loud and persistent I'd ask the dealer to check the window seals.

Not sure if this applies to you, but I had the same issue after install of a K40 in my 997.1. A wire comes from the engine compartment from the rear bumper detector to the control module in the rear passenger cabin. They drilled through a grommet to gain access. After reseat of the grommet the problem is better but not yet fixed. Sounds like the rear right window is open but that is impossible. They are working to reseal the grommet. I am hoping they can take care of the whistle. Good luck.

Thanks to all for the input.
Hmmm... I did have a radar detector installed (front and rear) and will get the dealer to check the install and grommet again.
I wonder if the positioning of the detector on the front bumper may be causing the whistle... well the car is going in tomorrow.

Yeah, the Mk1 had the problem with he channels in the outside of the mirror - solution was clear caulk installed by dealer!
I've not had this on my Mk2 (yet) and couldn't hear it if I did on my Gt3.

I have the whistle too and next time it's at the dealer, I'll ask them to delve into the cause. My 997.1 C2S was quiet and I suspect the larger mirrors, which is where it sounds like the noise is coming from.

first day i hit 110 coming out of the dealer w/o realizing it because the pdk didnt feel the same as my old 6sp 997
second day i had my 997.2 i drove 1000 miles and floored it a couple times to overtake slow traffic.. burns much less oil than others..

First place I'd check is the respective side mirror.
Had a whistling problem with the VW New Beetle at 30+mph, and after some close inspection myself (when the dealer didn't have a clue) noticed the left and right mirrors didn't look identical. The sound came from the left(driver) side only.. but since the car is symetrical, that didn't make sense. I found that there was a gap in the mirror housing that provided an opening for air to whistle past. It was a result of bad assembly.. and the dealer had the door adjusted (because of how the mirrors on the car are mounted) that closed up that gap.. and the whistling went away.
So not much of a gap can cause significant noise at relatively low speeds. If you have had external sensors installed or other work done that affects the exterior skin of the car, that would be a place to look as well.

The car is at the dealer with instructions to fix the problem or replace the car! I'm just not willing to put up with a car that drives you crazy with a high pitch whistle when you pick up speed. Ah well... it's a just a car... for the time being I'm getting my thrills riding my bike... just lovely.

I noticed the whistle from the 997.1 mirrors the first time I went out on a test drive in a cab. It drove me nuts. The salesman didn't hear it. Perhaps it was only on my side. My car finally developed that same noise during the aging of the car. I think it could have been brought about by a stone striking the mirror housing, causing the seal to change just enough. They 'fixed' it with something like GE Silicon, which is like me using duct tape to fix something on the Space Shuttle. Total BS. I would hope that they fixed the inherent design issue with the .2 mirrors.
