Is your car a keeper?
#61
I've made it for 10 years or more three times - and nothing as nice as my Porsche. I've had a few cars that were not keepers, but this seems like a complete love bomb. Besides it being a great one, I've mod'ed it significantly which further personalizes it and likely cannot be recovered in the least at resale; the car has depreciated so much that selling it doesn't contribute much to a new one; and I find the financial loss when turning over a car to be distasteful.
It's not as if a GT3RS doesn't excite me, but whatever is next will surely be an add, not a replace.

I've had a few I thought were keepers but the siren call of newer/better always got the best of me. I still miss my RS America (that should have been a keeper) and maybe my 993 Targa. Don't miss the 996. Still have the 997 C2S but will sell it soon; it might have been a "keeper" but as soon as the warranty expired I started worrying about potentially uber expensive repairs, like engine replacement or something.
But I am thinking my 09 TT is going to be the keeper. At my age, I can't keep upgrading like I have in the past. I feel more confident in the long-term longevity of the TT than the newer, cheaper blocks and trannies.
Famous last words??
When I tell my wife "this one will be the keeper", she just laughs and says BS!

I have recently looked at getting a new car but couldn't bring myself to part with the current ride. The new ones are nice and the deals certainly attractive but can't part with the PCCBs and aren't willing pay retail price for them either. They're worth an extra $5K to me. Additionally there is nothing about my current car that I am dissatisfied with.

I'm hoping my next 911 will be a keeper; probably a 997GT3.
I knew from very early on that my 997.1 would not be. It was not particularly reliable, and I hated the Tiptronic that the other half insisted on. And I grew very tired of keeping the black car clean. It was a 48 month lease, and I was fortunate to get out of it after 40 with some cash back in my pocket before the bottom feel out of the used 997 market.
Maybe I'm getting old, but cars are becoming too refined for my tastes, Porsches included. So I'm no longer longing for newer models.

I always thought the 997.1 was a very reliable sports car, did you get a lemon?
Me personally I just purchased a 997 and I doubt it will be a keeper, it's my first Porsche and I will likely sell it before it reaches 40,000 miles in the next 2-3 years and pick up a used 997 GT2/GT3 or Turbo depending on where the market is.
The keeper in my garage is a 2008 Shelby GT500 I purchased off the showroom floor and chiped up to 700 hp with a Griggs custom suspension/Watts Link and Koni Coilovers. This car will stomp the 911 and just about anything else on the road. I will keep it for 30 years.

Of my past Porsches :
71T lasted until 78, traded for:
76S Targa sold in 97.
92 C2 traded in 06 for:
06 997S (the car I expected to be my last new keeper) traded in 09
09 997S PDK- ( a deal I couldn't refuse), should be my keeper, or possibly my last new one. :>)

My thoughts exactly. I think that's why older models are experiencing a resurgence. I love all the modern day extras in my daily driver (sedan), but not in my sports cars. Maybe it's an older generation thing but it's why I recently added a Lotus to our garage and why I love driving it so much. It's as basic as my 1st 911 25 years ago.
