Looking to buy a CPO'd 997 C4 or C4S, budget of $55k, any tips?

I am probably going to buy a CPO'd 997, it has to be either a C4 or a C4S, but given that my budget is around $55k max (possibly could stretch to $58k), I am thinking a C4S out of the question.
Are there any things I should look out for? Is there much material difference in an 06, 07 or 08? Any issues that were solved in later years?
For me I prefer a newer car with less miles, over many expensive options. I value a car that looks as brand new as possible, both on the inside and outside, so warn out leather, nicks and dents are big negatives, which has me thinking a newer model is probably up my ally. Question is how realistic is it to get something like that for my budget, and how many miles should I expect to have on this kind of car?

just be patient and find the right one, they are definately out there in that price range. I bought a pristine 2006 CPO C4 with 13K miles for <$50,000.
Find the one you want, look at cars.com, and ebay to compare prices. You can look at the completed auctions on ebay to see what others are willing to offer on comparable cars. Then make an offer, if they don't like it ,then walk. Tthere are plenty of cars out there right now.

Another question I had is whether it's a bad idea to buy a used one from a non franchised Porsche dealer? Is there any way to get a Porsche dealer to CPO a car that another non franchised dealer has? Maybe by having them buy the car from that dealer, and then CPO'ing it?

First of all, there are no 4WD 997s from MY05. The MY05 cars are 996s. The 4WD 997 wasn't introduced until MY06.
There has been a significant redesign of the 4WD 997s beginning with the MY09 cars. Prior to 09, the 4WD cars operated with a viscous clutch arrangement,--quite unsophisticated. As technology improved, they finally put that into the MY09 cars.
If your budget is $55k you are out of luck, particularly with the description of your requirements. You could let Obama do some further magic for 6-9 more months and THEN your $55K may get you the bottom of that market.

Going to be pretty tough. Ran a check through autotrader nationwide and NO C4S came up under $60k with no limit on miles. Focused on just a C4 and came up with 7 cars and only two of them at a Porsche dealership. However, none are CPO. I guess you could try to get one of the cars being sold by the dealership to CPO them, but they might have to many miles (20k and 30k). Going to be tough to find what you want at that price.

since you are not too concerned about which options to get just make sure you get the three that are minimums with resale: Bose, heated seats, xenon. I've had more than one dealer tell me that these seem to be the only ones that are deal killers if they are not on the car.
