bought the cls amg because we felt like we needed more room even though wife has an SUV. we have 2 small kids (1 at the time). I felt like i should have a car we could all drive in and enjoy - the problem was i just didnt care about the car. Its over $100 new and super fast and comfy - it just wasnt fun an obviously wasnt a convertible. I missed my 911 every day since selling it. Finally gave in - wanted to be car happy again. Wife agreed so i dumped the cls and bought the car i was meant to have - 2010 997 S cab. i will never leave porsche again - its more than a car - its a way of life.. nothing better than a porsche convertible.

i cn get the family in buts its a tough sqeeze..Better to just put 1 person in or 2 at the most

but really the car is meant to drive alone..Adding people reduces the experience. Not because of weight but because of people being worried about driving fast or accelerating hard or taking a fast turn. The car was meant to enjoy by yourself - a personal; experience - just you and the car. kind of like a love affair.

Personally, I prefer my "love" to have one other person involved, but to each his own.

what was the baseline HP on the dyno for the 997S?

Someone elsewhere posted that Porsche didn't claim any HP gain, as if it did, had to do more EPA testing, etc... not sure how much of that is true.

It it possible my 2006 Carrera 4S Cab (WP0CB29926S768998) came with Sport Exhaust but no center console button to turn it on/off? I thought it was the tips but when the dealer decoded the factory options, it read: XLF Sport Exhaust System 2,400.00 - How could Porsche charge that much for tips? All other Porsche I've seen have the button with the pipes logo...

I could me wrong but I believe if your 997 has Sport Chrono you won't have the button/switch to turn it on or off. It's controlled by the DME and is in the 'loud' state above 20 or 30 mph (German noise law related). The console button you speak of is only on 997's w/ factory PSE & no Sport Chrono.

Here's something I've wondered re: PSE: The X51 package includes PSE, right?

Could we assume that at the very least the PSE isn't *restrictive* at X51 power levels? I guess my point is, though we'd like to think we can make significant gains w/the exhaust, Porsche has shown that:
a) the way to meaningful gains is elsewhere (actual engine mods) and
b) the PSE is the right exhaust for X51

Whether it opens up free HP for the non X51 cars is anyone's guess. But, it doesn't appear to be a limiting factor in any way.

I have not done any back to back testing with PSE mufflers, but I have done a lot of header/x pipe/high flow cat/backpressure testing on 996 & 997's with all engines (3.4, 3.6, & 3.8) and here are my theories:

996, 997, & 997 S with stock headers (not X51) will not gain any power with PSE or modded factory mufflers, only sound, especially if using stock cats.

997 & 997 S with X51 or aftermarket headers may notice a very slight gain in hp on the top end (6000+ rpm).

I would be interested as well in hearing what you've seen with the addition of 200 cell cats? plus GT3 TB and comp plenum? and then remapped/tuned ECU?

Thanks for this, what about *losing* Torque down low? I've heard with bigger headers you may lose torque in lower RPMs? Is that true? To me, that's where I need more power/torque, not on the top end.

997.1s with Sport Chrono don't have a separate button for PSE. In addition to activating the other SC features, the "Sport" button also turns on PSE. On 997.1s you can't get PSE sound without also getting the aggressive throttle response (orange plug disengagement notwithstanding).

997.2s have a PSE button both with SC and without.

I have yet to see a header-change-only lose low end torque, especially on the 997/997 S. Catbypass pipes will lose low end torque, even with stock mufflers. In fact, our headers alone on a 997S pick up BIG TIME low & mid range torque.

Our HJS Sport cats only pick up big gains. No losses anywhere. Smallest gain is about 9 ft. lbs of torque to the wheels. Biggest gains are 44 ft. lbs to the wheels.
Starting at 3000 rpm, the gain is 20 ft. lbs to the wheels, grows to 44 ft. lbs., then by redline we are still at 22 ft. lbs. gain to the wheels. This was on a bone stock car dyno'ed in 4th gear (to keep dyno drum speeds down). On our dyno we lose about 2% power when going to 5th gear. Since I have been here, I know we have installed GT3 TB & IPD plenums, but I'm not sure I have a good back to back dyno of that. I know I will when our new competition intake is ready for final testing before release.

One thing everyone must realize though, is that, by adding a set of headers to a 997S, you may pick up 30 ft. lbs. of torque in the mid range, and adding a set of sport cats may add 30-40 ft.lbs alone, but together the gains will not be compounded, i.e you will not gain 60-70 ft.lbs of torque to the wheels by adding headers and sport cats. Adding sport cats WILL increase the gains from headers alone, and vice versa.
