Default JD Power 2009 - I don't see Porsche

I don't see any Porsche cars making it to the top of the category. Does it mean they are below average?

Of course, this is the "Initial Quality Survey". i.e, the number of defects in the first 90 days. I'm not too impressed by this feat.

Porsche drops alot in the longer term studies.

In the first article linked, Porsche IS mentioned.

"Asian nameplates continue to lead the pack, though,
with buyers of Lexus vehicles, Toyota's luxury brand,
experiencing the fewest problems, followed by Porsche."

Time for new reading glasses.

Porsche is usually at or near the top in "Premium Sports Car"... That thing was only family cars.

references?

except for a truly minor issue, like a false CEL once, i don't recall ever having a Porsche problem. and i've owned many, and for a long time...

oh yeah, i also blew a synchro once, but it was my bad.

but i've had several VW's and had great luck there too.

Indeed - Porsche scored well above average in the 2009 JD Power long term dependability study.

The strange observation that 1) Porsche recommends a gradual break in period of 2000 miles in the U.S. but not in foriegn markets for the same cars and 2) the existence of a short term reliability rating such as J.D. Powers in the U.S.

Coincidence?

I don't place much stock in J.D. Power. I remember reading about how low the Hummer H2 scored on initial quality years ago. It scored low because the owners complained about bad gas mileage... What does that have to do with qaulity?

Those JD Power and other quality surveys (I chucked all of mine, but kept the JD Power $1 they sent me... send me $50 and I might spend the time to really think about things and fill it out)... not meaningful. I remember getting one for my new VW Golf in 1994 as well.

Whats the point there... it basically asks you if anything is broken on the brand new car. My cars have been working 100% at that young an age. I'd not take delivery if something was an issue. Is it really the case that lots of cars are rolling off the dealer lots brand new with stuff broken right form the get-go?

Much more usefull would be, if those surveys also asked about " What brand/model did you consider and NOT purchase?" and followups about why (price, features, fit, finish, etc).

^^I don't really agree with you. How many defects the car has initially is a good indication of the manufacturer's quality processes. As cars start to age, there are environmental factors beyond the manufacturer's control, like conditions the cars are driven in.
