Default Noob questions

My father is looking at getting a 997.2. He has an 86 targa that he bought new and has only put 61k on. Anyways, we test drove a few today (including a PDK base car that we really were not that impressed with, it was fun and all but teh left foot got bored). My father doesnt really want to drop 100k on a car, mind you he paid around 30k for the targa in 1985. He can afford it but just cannot justify spending that much on such a depreciating asset. Plus he really doesnt need the extra power. He doesnt really want a used car either. Therefore, we will most likely go for a C2.
However, there is an 09 C2s at the dealer that has 890 miles on it. It has never been titled as they claim to have used it during an "event", what should we pay for this car? The sticker is 102k, it has LSD, classic wheels, navi, 6speed, and a few other options I forgot.

61,000 in 23 years? That's 2600 miles per year. I'll say he doesn't need the extra power. Doesn't really need the LSD either though.
Why bother at all?

Buy a nice painting to look at instead.

Before any price suggestions......$102K sticker sounds high for an -09 C2. I think they start around $75K. If that sticker is correct then you're looking at one of the most loaded base cars I've ever heard of. Sounds like your father is NOT into whistles, bells and fluff so something is off here imo.

well to each their own, but if he wants new, he has to pay for it. i suspect that car could be had for $20K+ off the window.

but as little as he drives, why doesn't he get a superclean .1 with less than 5K miles for $20-25 less still and declare victory?

$30K in 1985 money is likely not that far from $80-90K when you factor inflation and TVM. actually if you include TVM it may be more than $100K

i mean, what's the difference?

The car in question is a c2S and he wants to buy a brand new car, does not want to get a used one. He drove the targa a lot when he first got it, then me and my brothers required more space and he has been driving suburbans (I know boring). The targa has been driven very lightly the past 15 years, probably only 2-3k miles. Now he has decided that he wants a new car, which he certainly deserves. He's not a bells and whistles type of guy, he got his first Ipod about a month ago. He hasnt completely said no to the S, he just needs some time to think about it.

Well, the C2S is "used", albeit very slightly and not titled. I would be very interested to know what kind of "event" it was used at, and you should get a readout of the ECU to see if there have been any excess of over-revs (i.e. to make sure it wasn't thrashed). But it should be a great deal and I would guess $20K+ off the C2S. The S has some nice features, but there is certainly nothing wrong with a C2. But I'd go for an S if possible.

Tell Dad he only lives once and to "go for it!" Tomorrow would be the perfect day to pick it up!

What is he doing with the Targa? Sounds like a nice car for someone. I would like to say I'm interested, but I probably have enough for now. Or is he giving that one to you?

It seems like your father needs to make his mind up. If he wants new, then as someone else said, he's going to have to pay the price and deal with the depreciation that comes along with it. It doesn't sound like he's going to be driving it very much if he's only driven 2-3k in the past 15 years (otherwise known as 2.89 feet / day). Personally, if I was driving under three feet a day, I'd opt to save as much as I could and go with a used. Especially if you aren't interested in PDK, the differences between a 997.1 and 997.2 aren't as great. I'd like a McLaren F1LM and F-22 Raptor, new, for very cheap, with no depreciation, however, we can't always get what we want and more often then not, have to settle for what we can.

We had a few cars at a local Porsche "event" where they let us take the cars around a track, in a rather spirited way, and then the PDE instructors switched seats and took us around the track to show us what the car can do.

I don't recall if the cars had plates, but this was certainly "an event".

You say he doesn't need the extra power, he's not a whistles and bells guy, he wants a new car and he's somewhat price conscious. It also sounds like he wants this to be special so unless he's in a hurry, why doesn't he order a new base car exactly the way he wants it?

"New" seems important so even if he adds a few treats, it'll still be less than the "event" car which in his eyes will never be a new car and will always be surrounded by question marks. I bet he would enjoy building his own car on the configurator site even if all he selects is exterior and interior color. Just another take on it fwiw....

exactly, if he is spending his money, he should get exactly what he wants. If he doesn't want to order one, then he should look other than locally. That's what I did! GL on the search, it's half the fun!

Seems like the right plan is to find a leftover 2008.

Depends on what the "event" was that the car was used for. If it was the 12 Hours of Sebring you might want to avoid that car.

The "event" seems fishy to me as well. Truth of the matter is that he has no idea what he wants. He just knows he wants a new car. He will be selling the targa (maybe trade it in), taking his suburban up to Montana and leaving it there, so the new car will be his daily driver and accumulate many more miles than the targa did. He's a big golfer and doesnt think the 911 is very practical as far as the golf clubs go. Therefore he is leaning toward a 2010 550i msport (6spd of course). This is by no means his final decision, just his comments to me today. I am still pushing the pcar
