The present economic times certainly have had an impact
on people's perspectives on flaunting money. However, the general population's
opinions of Eureopean vehicles in the U.S. have always stirred feelings
of hatred amongst those who do not drive them.
Even ten years ago, when everyone was making a lot of money in
the stock market and well-paying jobs were prevalent, people
would always make comments about your European car.
I drove 3 series BMW's all through undergrad and law school
and there was not a day that went by when someone did not
make a comment about driving a high priced import. A few
of my friends drove equally priced Lexus's and Infiiniti's and no one said
a word about their cars.
When I am going to the courthouse, I still make a point of parking
my car far away from potential juror's line of site, as an attempt
to not stir up a hatred towards me before I give them a chance
to actually hate me.

I've always thought people who vandalize others' properties or make snide remarks have too much time on their hands. They should try working ... harder.

I'm disappointed to read that it is spreading to areas other than the hand to mouth, physical labor land that I retired to in the name of skiing. It's common here. I was hoping to make one more move to an area where it would not happen.
It was happening here in this podunk sierra seasonal work town when economic times were great. It's not politics or even the economy directly, I've concluded it comes from people who realize that they've sold themselves short by settling for the work that comes with a high school education. For not trying harder. And now they are stuck with the bills, or a broken set of knees, and they're pissed at themselves.
A Porsche is a visual indicator that you did not settle for good enough.

I guess some of the less fortunate people associate Porsche owners with the bankers that brought down the economy and was venting their frustrations.
I actually had an encounter too when I was stopped at the red light, a red Civic pulled up aside me and a young kid in the driver seat asked me what I do for a living. I replied, engineer. He said he's studying to become an engineer too, and I wish him good luck. I think we could use more engineers.

I don't think I've had any negative verbal comments about my car. A lot of positive comments though. As for the negative, I do get aggressive driving actions from others in their BMWs, VWs, Volvos (yes really), pickup trucks, mini vans (for the love of God WTF are they thinking?), and so forth, which has been discussed at length elsewhere here. I just let them pass.

Burning Brakes
When attending biker week at Loudon NH one year my friend in his (944) decided to take it to the races for the day. No one touched it while we were parked, but as we were leaving and passing a large group of rowdy bikers they started yelling at us that porsche ansetors killed our familiy members.
This something I didn't expect from that group. Needless to say, we scurried outta there before they took it from us and torched it. This what they were doing to anyone that was riding a japanese bike. Rough place:-)

Last friday some college punks in a open top Jeep yelled "hey *******, your car is a piece of ****" (very orriginal). I ignored them, but at the next light we were side by side at red light. They kept revving like they wanted to race. I put it in first revved a little and inched forward. Light changed, they took off and I went about my normal drive. Funny part was when I passed them two lights down, they were putting on seatbelts and trying to find a place to pull over to receive thier ticket. Jackasses!

Years ago owning a Porsche was a rare thing. But things change. I've been driving Porsches since well before the porcupine joke was ever started. Unfortunately, the conduct of a few disturb the ownership for the rest of us. We should all strive to keep the image of the Porsche where it belongs,--as a great sporting car, and nothing else.
This sort of hatred is common in the UK for Porsche owners. There are reports of vandalism to Porsches all the time. Ditto for socialist Europe. THAT will be the end of Porsche,--when it's POLITICALLY INCORRECT to drive a Porsche. You understand that's why Porsche has green colors in their line up today, and why they are seriously engineering hybrid and diesel technology for their vehicles.

Mooty,
While I don't completely disagree, many of the financial innovation were invented so the banks can generate more fees from transactions.. (when you can re-sell the same underlying multiple times by re-packaging them..)
