No need to worry about how much oil you are burning. If Porsche gets too many complaints, they will just issue another TSB, like they did recently, increasing the allowable amount you can burn, making it normal once again. Part of the price they pay for filling the engine with Mobil 0W40, IMO, as well as just poor QA.

I suspect that eventually, they will no longer be filling the engines with Mobil 0W40 due to problems with protection and pressure from the EPA.

There is a rumor that Porsche will soon be advertising that their engines come with oil injection.

I was waiting for when 1999Porsche911 would finally enter into the fray with his 'expert opinion.'

Mine consumes next to nothing also. It makes me wonder if it being a daily driver helps in this regard.

Based on your graph, it appears that you're burning app. 1quart per 1000 miles. I have a 2005 911 (997) base Carrera 3.6, which a bought certified just recently. My dealer claimed the oil level was good (Princeton Porsche in NJ). Well, next day I checked the level using the procedure described in a manual. The indicator showed oil level to be below the minimum. I was very carefull adding new oil (Mobil 1 0W-40), adding 400mL per indicator bar. At the end, I was short 1 Quart. I recorded the miles and will take it from there. Let's see what my burning rate will be.

I'm at about 1200 miles or so - Oil meter hasn't moved; but I have my spare quart in the boot - ready.

My 2009's oil electronic dipstick has been erratic. When I first got it, the measurement is at the middle. At about 1700 miles, I got a warning, so I added half a quart. At about 1800, the warning came on again, so I added another half quart. Now at 2000 miles, the warning came on again. I measured it twice at different times in a day, and it always reported minimum level, so I added half quart again. Either the engine suddenly start burning a lot of oil, or the electronic dipstick is wacky on my car.

If it's reading the minimum (and giving you a warning) put in a quart.

It sounds like you have one of the engines that uses oil.

Since my original post, I've had to add a little bit of oil about once a week to keep it in the middle. No big deal...I've gotten used to it.

As an aside, I've noticed several people berate the Mobil 1 0W40. Why? Is there a better oil I should be using in the 997.2?

while i find your avatar conceptually disturbing, i'll defend your rights. a few years back it was more "explicit" avatars that raised trouble and only when a poster said his 12 yo daughter was freaked out did i grudgingly change. it featured two gorgeous women swapping spit.

anyway, i always stick with the mfgr's recommendation. very safe that way, regardless of who thinks what. those little fellas in the Vatherland know a thing or two...

You are most likely correct. Here's an earlier TSB saying 1.5 liters

i agree 100% that my avatar is conceptually disturbing...that's why i like it. so much going on that's it's almost impossible to process it all at once.

the logic for removing your avatar (please pm it to me so i can judge it's inappropriateness for myself - objectively, two women sharing a moment of mutual love really is a beautiful thing, right people?) is beyond me. first, i can't imagine the bar we're setting for all content on rennlist is the "12-year-old girl" standard. really? pretty much 80% of the content should be removed then, especially from OT. why would a 12-year-old girl even have the remotest idea what rennlist is? that's just ridiculous. also, they've seen much, much worse on virtually every other site they go to on the internet. bank on it, parents.

I say, when 12 yo girls start driving Porsches, then change your avatar - and no sooner.

While I do think it is a provocative photo, there's not really one thing objectionable about it really - other than perhaps that it is provocative. Some would have the world dumbed down so much that we could all be on Prozac or locked in pods like on the Matrix - I feel compelled to find an equally interesting avatar myself, but what with the Prozac and all, I have no imagination left.

Ya'll keep your kids out of the museums - keep 'em outta France, for that matter.
